Caboobaroo
well y'all know I have my pretty motor out of my car for a reseal and a nice paint job. Since it was out, I decided to replace the waterpump on it thinkin it would be a good idea so I wouldn't have to do it later. I ordered a '79 1600 waterpump from Schucks and I had it for about 2 weeks before I went to put it on. Well when I went to put it on, it was the wrong one:banghead: I ended up figuring out that it was an 1800 waterpump. I **thought** my motor was the original motor but now, I'm not quite sure. The waterpump that Schucks gave me was the one that works with the water channel that goes on top of the motor. Does anyone know what year this motor might be? Here are some pics before I put my waterpump on but the waterpump is just a regular EA81 pump. http://usmb.net/gallery/albuo62/AUT_2602 and even though this one is a little dark http://usmb.net/gallery/albuo62/AUT_2603
GeneralDisorder
The later EA71's had the same water pump as the EA81. I've pulled them from 1980 1600 cars in the JY that had the EA81 water pump..... but that could have been a replacement engine too. Hard to tell. Does it really matter? The engine should still work - hey maybe it has the hydro lifters too? That would be cool if it did. GD
MilesFox
it looks like the 87 hatch motor i had, it was the "fat case" as its called. we have a motor out of a 78 brat that has the water cross-pipe that bolts to the block under the intake. the fat case looked like an ea81. so it looks like you have the late model hatch motor with the old school ea71 bellhousing. maybe that's an ea81!(but it would say on th block) what kind of intake/carb setup does it have. i just notices yesterday that the old ea71 is too narrow for ea81 and ea82 intakes, but the hatch motor had an ea81 intake i remembered using a water pump off the hatch motor for my ea81, before i knwe of the fat case difference from the older style. before then, i assumed that all ea71 and ea81 parts interchanged. but if that is a fat case ea71, with the old ea71 bellhousing, then that proves to me that i can use my ea81 with the old ea71 bellhousing in the 78 brat! Caboobaroo
so ok, I was in the wrecking yard yesterday and there was a 79 Brat. The motor wasn't under the hood but it was in the bed. I looked at it and it too had the 1800 waterpump on it. I am like WTF? Did Subaru do something different in 79 or am I just crazy?
GLCraig
I can't remember if it was 79 or 80, when they made the change on the ea71 water pump. I do know that my 80 hatch had the original engine and it had the newer style pump. When I had that hatch Subaru had different part numbers for the ea71 and ea81 water pumps. The only obvious difference is that the ea71 pump had a black pulley and the ea81 had a green pulley. Maybe there was a difference in pulley diameter or just a difference in the paint color.
