Look what I did on Monday!

Crummy pic, and I didn't get any photos of the installation process, but let me tell you, it took ALL DAY monday, nine AM to nine PM.. Who here has installed a DIN stereo with a crutchfield kit, retaining the trip computer in its stock location????? because I have heard it is SUPPOSED to be relatively pain-free. Let me tell you, if you do not have a DIN cage for your receiver, it is NOT plug and play... :rolleyes:

I DID however, manage to install a cupholder at the same time; that certainly added some complication to my installation as well. (Of course, right underneath the stereo is NOT the most *convenient* place for a cupholder, but hey, its something :grin::lol:) The trip computer doesnt seem to line up properly with the screw holes in the plastic pieces provided with the install kit, though... In retrospect, I decided I would have been better off building a wooden "faceplate" like Loyale2.7Turbo did, rather than spend $30 on the "kit" that didn't line up properly. (Amigo, here it would be nice for you to link a pic of your stereo install :grin:)

I can take some more detailed photos of the installation when I take it apart to plug my front speakers in... Since I was already running a box in my back seat with the rear channel speakers in it, I had a long wire pigtail for that box. I simply ran that pigtail up into the receiver, totally bypassing the rear channel speaker wires.. so now I need to use the car's existing wiring to hit the front door speakers.

Which wires are those on the factory stereo harness?? :brow: When I get that information, I will take everything back apart to jack the front channel in and take more detailed photos, as well as try to line the stinking trip computer up better. By the time I actually got to fitting it all into the car, the sun had gone down so I was feeling too hasty for photographs, or even a good, careful fit.

Of Course! it is my Wooden Setup, Painted like the Dash...

I forgot to say that Loyales came with a "Different-than-any-car" Stereo Setup, let me Explain:

All the Four Speakers´ Wires got their Positives (+) independent, you can Find ´em on the Stock Plug.

Negatives (Ground or -) are a Different Story: the Negatives are Just one Common Wire for each Pair, For Example: Rear Left & Rear Right Shares one Wire for the Ground (-).

Someone I don´t Remember did post that Factory has installed All Independent Wires for All Four Speakers, and Near -Down- the Main Plug, the Negatives are United in one wire, so it Might be Easy to Separate ´em and use a New Plug "Correctly Wired" to use Independent Wires for Each.

Why? ... Well... if you use "Mixed" Wires, Newer Stereo Units Shall Stop Workin´ and might burn their Output Circuit, due to it´s Fader config. Old units can work, but some issues may happen, along to the Increased Resistance Ohms that can damage the unit too.

I didn´t knew that Subaru did put all independent Wires and tied together the negatives, at the time I make the Instalation, so I did put a new wires for the Ground, along with a new Plug that use all the Pins / Connection independent. (Taken from a Isuzu P´up)

I can make and Upload here, a Hand Drawin´ of the Original Subie Wires´ Plug and the Meanin´ of Each pin, if you want.

Well I already ran all new wires to the rear channel.. so I was just wondering which wires to snip out of the plug for the stock stereo to connect to the front channel of my new one.

I wired this stereo totally custom, I used the stock "constant live" line, but ran a direct chassis ground inside the dash, and ran a fresh "Switched" power cable out of the fuse panel.. so, in other words, the plug for the stock unit is just sitting back there. I want to tap into the wires for the front speakers that already exist, but i was unsure which ones they were on the plug. If anyone can post the colors of the wires I need, I'd appreciate it. :brow: Otherwise, tonight I will get off my lazy bum and search for it.

grounds are blue for left. blue/orange stripe for right. To loacate which wire are + for fronts, use a 9v battery. touch the ground to the neg post and wire by wire try them on the positve. This will make the speaker "click" you should be able to hear which one. On top of that I think you are looking for white for right side and yellow for left. I can post excact colors tonight if you still need them.

You can also easily tap into those wires under the kick panels on each side. speaker wires go through a 2 prong, pink connector one on each side. Just crimp spades onto some new speaker wire and plug it into the pink connectors, run to the middle of dash. That eliminates all the common grounding problems.

Well, I noticed Loyale had linked me to the USRM and looked in there, and found this:

Begin by stripping ¼” or so from the ends of all the wires on both the headunit harness and the adaptor harness. You’ll notice that a lot of the colors are the same on both harnesses. For most stereos (the chief exception being older Pioneers) you can simply connect like colors. I like to twist both wires together and connect with just one crimp. This gives a great connection that’s very strong. You'll need to connect:

* Yellow

* Red

* Black

* White

* White / Black

* Grey

* Grey / Black

THAT would suggest to me that I need to find the grey and white pairs, and then "click" them with a battery to see which is right and left..

I also know all about making the speaker "tick" with a battery, but had NO place to begin with before.. Between your post, and that in the USRM, I believe I should be able to find the wires I need.

Since I already ran all new wires for my rear channel, is there any reason not to just hop straight onto the stock plug for my wires? I have special skinny female crimp on connectors to slide onto the stock plug's pins.. so I can just tap in there, and avoid cutting the stock harness whatsoever.

I may not be being as clear as possible today.. so let me re phrase. Since I have all new rear wiring, to MY understanding I should be A-OK running wires out of my new stereo, into the pins on the plug for the stock stereo, for the front speaker circuits. Correct?

Thats awesome that you were able to maintain the trip computer AND ADD cup holders to the setup. Great job!! :clap:

Thanks. That gave me the warm fuzzies inside.. (in this TOTALLY hetero, platonic, automotive way.. like a new torque wrench kinda warm fuzzies..)
