I am going to order a rebuildt engine from C.C.R. can I order a 96 2.2 engine which is non interference and put it in my 97 which is interference, without running into problems with the computer or other hook ups.

Ask CCR they will give you a straight answer.

yes, swap away. if you want to check a possible item, yours should currently have an EGR valve, make sure the 96 does as well (it should, i think they all do in 1996).

it'll plug and play, no computer issues at all.

no matter what, i guess you'll have a shop do the install, make sure they keep all the accessories and brackets for the a/c and power steering. just mentioning that in case they yank the motor before getting the new one in.

You two are on top of things, I was wanting an answer soon so I could get my order in but did not expect it that fast. Thanks

They said it would work, but I like to get second and third opinions, I figure someone here has already tried it and knows for sure.

you may have to change tte exhaust y pipe. my 96 2.2L was a single port exhaust. the 95 is supposed to be dual port like the 2.5L outbacks. i'm not familiar with the 97-99 2.2L engines.

My 97 has the exhaust coming down on both sides of the engine also. I have been told by Litha Subaru and C.C.R. that I can make this swap from 96 to 97. Litha told me that there would be some issues swapping a 95 to 97 I did not ask them why, maybe someone here knows.

In case it matters, my 96 2.2L does'nt have an EGR valve.

I dont remember where the EGR valve is mounted but CCR told me I would have to bolt my intake onto the new engine so maybe this will take care of that. Dont the EGR send the exhaust gas back to the intake? I still have a few days to change my order with CCR so I hope to have all of the information I need to make the right choice, I do not want the interference engine of the 97 if I can by pass it with no problems.

2.2 l engines had EGR only with auto transmission and OBDII. On EGR-equipped engines, left cylinder head has a passage drilled into exhaust port from the rear side.

My Loyale's 1.8L had one but I dont remember how it was mounted. It surely must need a tap on the exhaust manifold somewhere.
