DPDISXR4Ti
I have a canopy top like this one... ...and I want to fit/fabricate a roll bar like this one.... I'm assuming I can fit the topper over the roll bar pictured, yes? Does anyone know if I could go even higher? Just a little bit higher even? BTW, does anyone know who's roll bar this is on the red car? It's just a pic I had in my Brat archives, but it appears well-designed, impeding on bed space as little as possible. GeneralDisorder
That's a standard low profile roll bar. It was a dealer option. GD
moosens
Yes Brad, there's a slightly taller version for the "camper top" you have. I just sold one on eBay.The guy hasn't come ot pick it up yet,but he's kept in touch,so I can't bail out on him. How's the project???
mcbrat
that was my red brat "before"... I have a tall roll bar now obviously, and it's too tall for a high topper.... the way your topper looks, I wouldn't go too much higher with the roll bar.... I probably couldn't use an actual one designed for a Brat, given that my shock towers are about an inch further back, and I'll need to go another 11" down through the bed to the XR's floor. Just trying to get some guidelines, as the cap is actually at my brother's place in Wallingford. It's doesn't look like it's getting here until I get this damn thing road-worthy. Speaking of which, after a couple months off for cold weather hibernation, I've been working on the XRBrati Project again over the last week. I've FINALLY got it cut into place, hence the reason I'm now working on bringing the two bodies together in a structurally sound way. I figure a 6-pt roll bar does that better than anything. In fact, it was from searching on here earlier today that I found these guys: http://web.inetba.com/autoweld/index2.ivnu Has anyone used them? It would be nice to find someone more local who's reasonable, but I'm not finding that. I suspect my best bet would be to trailer the car out once I get to that point. Don't want to risk having it break in half by driving it out there!

DPDISXR4Ti
speaking of merkurs theres a nice sounding xr4ti on nyc craigslist for $800 please post up some pics I just passed on a nice, rust-free XR for $800. Don't go telling me about another one! Just go here for the full pictorial story of the XRBrati Project: http://forum.merkurclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2639 You can just zoom ahead to page 12 if you want the most recent shots. I need to get some updated ones taken over the next week or two. I was working on fitting the rear bumper just yesterday. As I suspected, it fits nice ...until you try to lower the tailgate all the way. I think I'll only need to drop it down by about an inch, so just a small matter of re-fabricating the bumper shock mounts.
moosens
My '78 had a higher roll bar with the topper.Should see those in the Brochures page. The 2nd Gen Brat experts can probably give you a better idea of wether or not there's a high bar to go with the camper topper.Sorry about that. But I suspect you can make one just a pinch higher so you can look even more cool with the bar showing and your Hellas or ?? glowing on top, when you have the shell off. I might have a picture of the Gen II Brat with the bar. Gotta sleep, will check back tomorrow.

Yea, that's sorta the idea, as well as maximum headroom for any seated passengers. I suspect that the time spent with the shell on will be minimal, but as long as I already have it, I want it to fit! 75subie
i don`t believe there is a high rollbar available that a topper would fit over. you'd need to fab one up or trim one down. wow, that thing looks pretty cool! i see the body lines are a little off. are you going to move that body line up on the brat bed? i hear those merkurs were pretty fast. i know my pops old t-bird tc 5sp was a rocket. DPDISXR4Ti
i see the body lines are a little off. are you going to move that body line up on the brat bed? Which body lines are you referring to? The one at hip height on the rear quarter of the Brat is just going to flatten out and fade away as it overlaps into the XR body. That's been a lot more challenging on the passenger side due to the fuel filler. Bottom line, I'm planning on Rhino-liner-ing that portion entirely so that it doesn't have to be perfect. Nice progress on your project, there... You seem to have a good dose of the true craftsman in you, and I always like to see that. Its nice to see a project being taken so seriously and carefully.. I read your comment about hours of progress resulting in 1/8 inch of movement on the fit, and that being a good thing.. I hear you. Keep going, you look to be VERY close. Hopefully this summer you'll be done
moosens
Wow,finally scrolled through the project post.Coming along!! and looking very very cool. Like Joe said,"Is this going to make Carlisle this year??" Heck, even if you trailered it you'd get plenty of attention. Makes me wish I had time to stop up just to observe and possibly contribute. Makes me wish I had time to stop up just to observe and possibly contribute. WHICH Carlisle?:-p The way I see it, this thing should be welcome at four of their shows.... Performance & Style Import Nationals Ford Nationals Truck Nationals I'm still holding out a slim hope of getting it to the Ford show, but it's looking bleak. If I'm able to get it to a sound "work in progress" stage, then I might borrow the plates and tags from my other Merkur (shhh!) and get it out there. We'll see. You're welcome to stop by most any time Paul. I remember when you were here about a year ago, I had just "discovered" that I would be able to use the B pillars from both cars. Well, that totally turned out to be a false hope - I've had to cut a lot more of the structure out of the Brat than I had hoped - that's why I've decided I've got to go with a roll bar - it'll be the best way to get some structrue back IN to this thing once everything is bonded in place. moosens
Import/Kit,that's the one we all go to. Love to see it anytime, but at that show it would be a huge hit with the Ultimate Subaru gang....or it should be,barring hardcore opinions. Couldn't help but notice that each time pics were posted a little more was chopped away.Understandable for fitting reasons. You basically scribe it in like I would cabinets,mantles,etc....but yes,the support is needed for rigidity or you'll be twisting the night away,in a bad way.:-\ Unfortunately I look to be leaving my current job, which i'm laid off from anyways (but working elsewhere,so no worries). At the main gig I have access to plenty of galanized pipe and a mandrel sits up in a loft relatively unused. And of course,a welder, both the unit(s) and the person both of which I could commence to create just about any roll cage, etc. for just about any situation...but,time to turn pages.I was running the shop, but the owner brought in a friend and nepotism has/had reduced my status there and now causes me to move on.
