Uberoo
what is the worst that can happen to a ej22 that is idled for 10ish minutes with no coolant or ambiant airflow?yesterday i idled my ej22 swaped gl wagon for 12 minutes.During that time the lower radiator hose poped off the water pump draining all of the water on the ground.I had to run inside my house to do something.I come out at the 12 minute mark to find the hose dangling and a large pool of water under there. The motor smelt hot.Turned it off the instant I saw the pool of water.Could it have gotten hot enough to blow the HG or warp the heads?I didn't have the o2 sensor hooked up so it was proabally flooding the cyclinders with fuel.My temp sender is attached to the upper radiator hose so it showed 130*F(lowest the gauge reads.IS the '22 tough enough to withstand that sort of abuse or is it like the EA82 wear as the heads would be warped 6 times the amount it can be warped and the headgaskets would be vaporized? engine is a 90 legacy EJ22
86BRATMAN
Well I wouldn't worry to much about it. Others may disagree, but we had a 90 2wd Legacy sedan, dad had the water pump and t-belts done on the car before we went to my brother's house of thanksgiving. What dad didn't know is that during the procedure they screwed something up on the radiator and dumped a bunch of stop leak into it to "fix" it. We left from here, and within 10 miles of the house temp guage was pegged out. Dad thought it was a bad sensor, car ran ok. Anyway, long story short, 600 miles later, on the return trip it started singing a 16 valve symphony and quit running. Heads were warped, but still within tolerance. Mill job, new radiator/water pump/timing belt again, hg's and it was going again. Ok, anyways, you should be fine.
Suzam
About the only thing you can do is change the oil, just in case it got a little cooked. Otherwise if it's running well now, you should be OK.
Uberoo
no I just can't get water to circulate though it.BTW what is the 16V syphony?
86BRATMAN
no I just can't get water to circulate though it.BTW what is the 16V syphony? All the valves in the motor pinging. At least thats what dad called it. it was detonating like a mofo. Stuck thermostat most likely. Might be the cause of it popping off the hose as well. OB99W
[...]I didn't have the o2 sensor hooked up so it was proabally flooding the cyclinders with fuel.Running really rich could have helped the situation, cooling things a bit. My temp sender is attached to the upper radiator hose so it showed 130*F(lowest the gauge reads.Since coolant is what conducts the heat to the sender, without any the temperature reading is pretty meaningless -- the engine could have been much hotter. IS the '22 tough enough to withstand that sort of abuse or is it like the EA82 wear as the heads would be warped 6 times the amount it can be warped and the headgaskets would be vaporized? engine is a 90 legacy EJ22 It's hard to tell. I'd suggest getting coolant back in it (make sure there are no air pockets, and that the water pump is working, etc.), and just see what it does. nipper
What he said but it needs an oil change. Also a compression test before you do any real driving. nipper
