EJ25 swapped to a EJ22.. need advice

I'm workin a 2001 2.5 TS Impreza at work.. a lube shop didnt tighten the drain plug in the oil pan, so it ran with no oil and siezed the cams up. I wont be rebuilding that engine. Instead I have a 1997 or 1998 Legacy wagon with a EJ22 in it. I pulled both motors and didnt notice much difference except for the water jacket sensors.

 

I Will be reusing the 2.5 Intake and everythign, so basically its just the EJ22 block going in the car. Has anyone done this swap and what problems am I going to run into? Everything else has the same plugs on it from what I can tell. I'm just wondering about the ECU making the engine run rich since its designed for a 2.5.

 

Engine codes off the cars are:

2001 impreza - EJ251AX3AB

1997/98 legacy - EJ223AXAWL

In order to use the 2.5 intake, you'll need to use the heads. Since the cams are stuck, you'll be using the ej22 heads and intake mani. Swap over the sensors from the ej25 and put it in. Also, you will need to use the exhaust manifold form the ej22, since being a phase 2 it will be single exhaust port.

hmmm I'ma have to look closer.. I took the intake gasket off the 2.5 and put it on the 2.2 head and they seemed to line up. I did it ina hurry on my way out the door so I may have overlooked the inner bolts... will check tommorow.. and yea, I noticed the exhaust when I pulled it.. kinda funny that they went from dual port to single port and then back to dual port exhaust over the years. I'm guessing dual port flow mo betteR?

there is no egr pipe on either motors thank god. thats one thing that I was worried about, but after pulling both motors, the only real difference I saw was on the water jacket and othe rhtan that, everything is the same..

 

to hell with the 8 bolt bellhousings.. the 4 bolt are soo much easier to work on

Why are you swapping the intake? Here is my stock answer

 

Going to make this simple for you as I have done the 2.5 to 2.2 on a Legacy Outback. I used a 97 2.2.

 

From the donor car (450 dollars tops)

 

1) Engine / use the exhaust manifold from the 2.2 donor

2) AC Compressor and hoses from your 2.5 mount onto the 2.2

3) Metal Power steering lines from the 2.2 move them over

4) The fly-wheel from the 2.5 will have to be moved over to the 2.2.

 

From Subaru

1) All new exhaust gaskets (10 dollars)

2) new o-rings for the AC hoses you disconnect

3) new o-rings for the power steering lines you disconnect

 

From Walmart

1) 2 cans of 12 oz refrigerant and a refill hose (30 bucks)

 

While you are at it replace this on the 2.2 donor (100 bucks) an easy to do with the engine out.

1) Harmonic balancer (50 ebay)

2) AC and Alternator belts (20 pepboys)

3) Rear cam seal (5 dollars)

4) Oil Separator Plate (sure to be leaking, original is plastic) (15 dollars)

5) Rear main seal. (20 dollars)

6) Spark Plugs (10 dollars)

7) PCV Valve ( 8 dollars)

8) Valve cover gaskets (2 of these) and grommets for the bolts (30 dollars)

9) Reseal the oil-pan and replace both gaskets that are internal. (RTV temp sealer 4 bucks, gaskets are 10 bucks)

Why disconnect the AC compressor at all...just use the bracket off the 2.5...it will bolt right on the 2.2, at least it did on my 97 Outback...
