Uberoo
On my 1987 GL wagon when I turn the wheels all the way to lock in reverse(so front of car will go left) I hear a horrible grinding sound from the right front wheel area.Even worse is when it happens it is almost enough to stall my Ej22 if I dont apply gas.The car did it a little bit on the other side but it was right after a wheeling trip with a torn boot:dead: Replaced that axle and the noise on that side of the car went away(didn't replace hub or bearings). So the main problem on the right of the car.The boot isn't torn and the axle seems to work properly...It only does it in reverse,Full lock in 1st does nothing. so could this be wheelbearings, hubs, and axles, Oh My! Frank B
The axle can and will go bad without the boot tearing. It's just like any other mechanical thing that wears out in time. The first symptoms present themselves while turning since it's under stress at that point. Try cleaning up the area since it may be dirt or a small stone lodged in the brakes or shield, but that's a long shot. it does sound like an axle. The wheel bearings usually gring while turning when the wieght of the car is transfered to that side, and even when the weight is shifted off of that side too, but not at full lock at slow speeds. The only part that's stressed at that point is the CV joint. I'd say leave it alone untill it grinds all the time, or during less of a turn going forwards. Could it be your power steering pump.It could be it bogging down that try's to stall the motor. Happens at full lock right? It could be that another part of the PS system is overloading the pump. But it is making the Pump squeal. And the pump is located on the right front of engine.
Uberoo
pump doesnt squeel except when the belt is covered in mud!!! I will watch the axle then. Thanks
psylosyfer
See if the brake caliper is scraping the inside of the rim when it happens, I had a gl do that, After replacing the half axle! Didn't do it before. Had to get a different rim. Only did it in reverse with steering hard over.
