preping EA82 manifold fo EA81 Weber install. Dial up beware!

Recommended Posts

Just thought I'd share some pics of the prep.

Not much need to port match the intake.

I suspect this little thing is to imrpove atomization ???? Should it stay or should I make it go away?? It goes back up into the intake as far as my finger can reach so it may be difficult to grind out.

A small piece of aluminum window screen to form a bowl filled with JB Weld. It was level with the top when I put it in, but it seeped thru the screen. I'll wait untill it's cured then top it off. I just don't like to think about the drips of JB in the coolant passage!!! I should have used the JB Quick Weld....

After the coolant hose tube was removed and the tang cut off. Notice the run in the JB. I'll have to clean that up and touch it up after it cures too.

With the adapter sitting on the intake. I'll have to re-tap the holes to 8mm to match the studs for the plate. And notice the small amount of intake that protrudes into the passage? That's gonna go away. There's also rooom under the secondary side to remove material on both the plate and the intake to open that up too. But I'll have to be careful because there isn't much room. Plenty on the intake, just not on the late. It's recessed a bit so I may have to "fill it" with JB too.

Also, for those that have the EA82 intake on the EA81, did you hook up the EGR? It looks like the pipe will have to be modified, and the EGR valve itself may hit the pitch stopper. I'll find out when I get it on the block I guess.

Oh, I used a small grinding and a sanding wheel on my Dremel to clean up all the areas that I used the JB Weld to give it some fresh metal to bond to. And a small wire wheel in the Dremel to clean up the gasket surfaces. Worked like a charm!

Lots of folks have done the Weber swap - myself I've done it fully half a dozen times or more now. The first few I ground some on the flange to "match" and the rest I didn't. It doesn't matter either way - the difference is non-existant. Others I talked to when I had the same idea as you agreed. The heads flow so badly, and the cam curve is such that the rest of the manifold matters little. The EA82 manifold flows a bit better than the EA81 but it's not much, and doesn't seem to make any difference in power. The biggest win for the EA81's is changing the cam and porting the heads in conjunction with a slight compression increase. Even then the EA81 stock manifold is more than adequate for 100HP.

Dunno if others had an issue with this. But, when my brother put an EA82 manifold on an EA81 he had to grind about 4mm off part of the top of the block to fit it.. No biggy really.

You will also want to use the temp sensor off an EA81. I think the EA82 ones make the gauge read low, but not 100% sure.

Webers make all the difference with power, enjoy.

Thanks, I do plan on using the sensors from the ea81 manifold. But I'm also going to try to keep the EGR and air suction valve operational. This is a weekend only thing so it will be a while before I get it all done.

  • 2 weeks later...

Does anyone know if this Carb will bolt up to a EA81 without mods? I keep hearing how great they are, and if I can solve those low end chugs and other probs with this I will pay the Moneys. I have some cash because I got rear ended and the damage is just the muffler and the bumper (but being a $570 beater, the car was totaled). the insurance money is enough to fix the exhaust and buy this thing. Anyone have any knowledge here?

Thnks

Yeh same here, the corner of the altinator bracket hits the 'box' in the manifold under the carb.

You might also have to bend the connector pipe off the disty vac advance can to clear the manifold.

  • 1 year later...

I have seen Some People install it Backwards...

in EA82`s with Power Steerin` Option, the Choke hits the Power Steerin` Pump. In my EA82 Wagon I Just Removed the Choke and no Problem with that due to Our Caribbean Climates here...

So, if you Live in Cool Climates Area, maybe is Better Idea to install it Backwards, or could it be done a Manual Choke Swap?

Good Luck!

I am in the middle of putting an ea82 manifold w/ weber on my ea81, with the carb sitting forward the choke hits the distributor. Is there a smaller distributor? or should I put it on backwards. Any ideas?

PM me your email addy and I can send you info on how I did mine.
