tranny swap questions 96 legacy to a 95 impreza

Recommended Posts

whats up guys. so I got another new gen question for ya. I have a 96 Legacy LS wagon (EJ22) with a A/T in it. tranny is toast. I have a 95 Impreza sedan (ej22) in it for parts. Tranny # is different

Legacy - TZ102ZAAAA

Impreza - TZ102ZA3BA

Wondering if the rear ends will work with each other. I looked through the board and the only thread I could find that made any sense was http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=68110&highlight=legacy+rear+end+ratio

but it didnt really list the Transmission codes with the rear end ratio.

Give me a shout back and let me know if they will work, or if I need to pull the impreza rear end to put in the legacy along with the transmission

I'm having pretty much the same issue. Funny thing is how endwrench suggests finding out:

Jack up the car and count front and rear wheel revolutions.

My transmission in question is pn TZ102ZA5AA, from a 97-99(?) 2.2 Impreza.

From what I can gather from all the threads about this here is that it's a 4.1 so I'm going to need a rear diff it seems.

yea thats what I gathered too was 4.11 was the rear diff ratio. I'm going to just put the transmission in and drive it.. if it binds up, I'll put the impreza rear diff in.

I wish subaru woulda left the nice lil stickers on the rear diff with the ratio.... damn them..

no, if it binds up you could already be ruining parts. You should be able to drive around for a very short period of time with the FWD fuse though.

I think all 96-01 Impreza 2.2 4eats have a 4.111 rear diff.

Here's a chart with trans codes, m/t gear and final drive ratios:

there must be something similar for autos around somewhere.

Legacy - TZ102ZAAAA -

Impreza - TZ102ZA3BA - is this an outback sport?

i THINK these trans will have the same rear ends, but i don't know alot about impreza. in legacys the 7th position indicates the engine size and this dictates the final drive ratio.

all 90 - 99 legacy with a 2.2L engine had an 'A' in the 7th position.

all 96 - 99 with a 2.5L engine and a '2' in the 7th position. (late 99 went to a phase 2 or a transitional version, it has a J in the part number but the final drive didn't change.)

the one exception is the 96 -2.2L outback, it had the same trans / diff combination as the 2.5L outback.

it is my OPINION that all TZ102Zxxxx trans are basically the same, the final drive ratios and the TCUs adapt them.

my conclusions: (96 - 99 legacy)

the last 4 charactures, 7 -10, in the part number tell the following:

7TH - final drive ratio; 2= 2.5L engine & 4.44, A=2.2L engine & 4.11

8TH - which year/version 3 is earlier than 5 (impreza uses numbers) and C comes after B (legacy uses letters).

9 & 10 - the model of the car AA=legacy, BA=outback (or apparently impreza, outback?), CA=GT

in 2000 they started using the same trans part number in the legacy 2.2L as the impreza 2.2L. (impreza started using it in 99.) and of course the 2.2L legacy was soon phased out.

i hope this helps.

there is really only one question regarding these two trans, do the final drives match? the internal gearing is the same.

i think the impreza trans number is a typo, should be TZ102Z3ABA, not ...Z3A13A.

research the fnal drive for the corresponding cars and i'll bet the part numbers match. look here under "train" when you see it.:

http://opposedforces.com/parts

they appear to be the same, 4.11 final drive.

thanks a ton, that is some great info. it would seem that characters 8-10 are used as identifiers for the vehicle and dont really affect the trans at all. the important characters are 1-7. as long as those 7 are the same a swap should work out just fine. that was indeed a typo, couldnt read the parts guy's writing.

sorry to bring back such an old thread!!

a quick question if anybody knows the answer..

if the part number of two trans are exactly the same apart from the 8th diget (version).. can a later one replace an earlier on?

ie, can a 'D' replace a 'C'?

many thanks in advance

James

i would feel more comfortable answering this if i had the full trans ID# and car year, model, engine info.

because as soon as i say yes, someone will find a situation where it is not true.

yes, if the rest of the trans ID# is EXACTLY the same then a newer one will work fine in an older car.

what are the ID numbers?

Thats promising!!

My trans number is

TZ1A42FDBA from a NZ new 01 Outback with an EJ25 SOHC

and the only trans I can find in NZ to replace it (as most are JDM import) is a TZ1A4ZFCBA from an 01 Outback/Lancaster Jap import (that I think had an EJ25 DOHC)

So by the look of it, it is actually an earlier one :(

Any info would be great if I can swap them!

Many thanks in advance

James
