82 Suby
Just bought my first Subaru. It's an 82 glf coupe 2wd. Anything I should know? Good/bad? Mods? It has 73000 original miles on it and is almost flawless. The only thing I have found that does not work is the cruise. I bought it from a college student and she dumped about $5000 dollars into it and then her parents said they did not want her to have a vehicle without airbags. Lucky me, I got it for $2200. Thank's, Kevin
nipper
Wow what a sweet deal. Aside from being underpowered, its a sweet car. Just watch out for rust, otherwise it will just keep going as long as you change the fluids regulalry and gentle pat her on the hood once in a while. nipper
Milemaker13
Wow, $2200 for an 82 2wd coupe. What work was done for the 5 gs?

Cougar
Welcome to the forum here 82 Suby. Hope you like it here. There some very savy Suby owners here that can help you with just about anything on your car. For the problem with the cruise control make sure the cruise disconnect switches on the brake pedal and, clutch pedal if you have one, are adjusted properly. The CC on my '83 was out for a long time until I found out it was just due to the brake pedal not pushing the switch in enough to open it (I think it opens the switch, it may close it). The CC thought the brake was always on. A simple fix for that one at least. Hopefully you find the same thing on yours.
82 Suby
Thaks for the help. I'm sure there are other things that I can do to ot increase performance so if anyone has anything let me know. Or if it is easier for me to do a search let me know. Thank's, Kevin
Zebisko
As far as I know, there aren't too many upgrades capable on the motors on these cars. There are two induction options, one of which is converting to the SPFI system from later 80's Subaru's, and another would be a Weber carb. This is a link for the DIY for the SPFI, made by our man, General Disorder http://home.comcast.net/~trilinear/EA81_SPFI.html Redline makes a conversion kit for Webers, and here is a link for that. http://www.redlineweber.com/html/application_guide/SUBARU.htm I think you can upgrade your rear brakes to discs, but don't quote me on that. Someone else will chime in about that, I am sure. Apart from that, I can't think of anything else I have heard of.
daeron
There really isnt a great deal more to do beyond what zebisko outlined.. I mean, you CAN swap in a late, EJ series engine.. and I *believe* you could go to great lengths and swap over to the 5 lug suspension stuff out of an early legacy.. but the EA81 cars like yours, I am not too sure if that is as easy on. The "five lug swap" (term used to collectively refer to the full suspension upgrade, so you have an option for aftermarket parts) is predominantly for the EA-82 cars. I know it seems hard to believe, but it IS a 1982 subaru; there just isnt much aftermarket support, and there wasnt exactly any racing effort behind these cars... Without any of that, your options are VERY limited.
82 Suby
Thanks for the help. I saw and article about making six lug mods from a 4 lug set up. Anyone done this? It said you use a 6x139.7 wheel pattern and drill up the other holes on a 4 lug hub.
Milemaker13
What is the appeal of 5 or 6 lugs? If its a whole suspension swap, I understand... But just to get more lugs? Are we afraid an EA81 will twist 4 lugs off?
Zebisko
With a different lug set-up you can use different, more common wheels. The main thing with the six lug swap is so you can just throw on a set of Chevy wheels and tires on a lifted vehicle. Apart from that, there is the suspension swap 5 lug. As far as I can tell, there are no other reasons to.

Are we afraid an EA81 will twist 4 lugs off? Nah, it's to get larger diameter rims -- at least in the US, we only got 13" rims in the 4 bolt pattern. I just got a set of 14" pugs for mine, which are the only other four bolt pattern the same as subies. But I was also looking at the set of all terrain tires I took of my old mazda truck -- 14" rims with the right 6 lug pattern. I might try them on there just to see how they look.
