Uberoo
When I was reading up on the EA-EJ swap.I was told not to use the stock exhaust from the EA series vehicle because "it will choke the motor to no end" I did some measuring of the tubing on the EA82 Y pipe/cat.The tubes coming off the heads on the EA82 Y pipe are 1.75",Exactly the same as the pipes coming off the EJ heads...After the back of the cat it goes into 2" pipe. That is where the restriction comes in.I chopped the section out.Lo and behold I can fit the 2.25" pipe that I was planning on using for an exhaust over the outlet off the cat..So you can use the EA82 Y pipe just it needs bigger tubing after the cat. While I was there I happened to notice how small the holes in the honeycomb in the cat were...Fast forward about 30 minutes after alot of bashing noises,My Y pipe flows ALOT better! idosubaru
i had never heard of the choking problem, but i've never done an EA to EJ swap either. the EJ headers may look bigger because the heat shields are still intact, just a guess? the ones i have in my garage "seem" larger, maybe it's the heat shield, or lack of rust or me. did you start the car after bashing the honeycomb out? that's the best part...listening to it pop and sputter and shoot the remaining pieces out like a projectile. do not have anything valuable or breakable behind it after "cleaning" a cat out. Uberoo
Currently The cat is throughly clean out.But it is not connected to the EJ exhaust right now.I have to weld it in monday. But as far as the pop and crackle...My exhaust on the engine right now consits of a 16" long section on one side and a 12" section on the other head..When I got the motor it had no cat I started to make a Y.But then I realized I could use the old Y pipe with some bigger pipe after the "resonator"..
ballitch
if at all possible, try to use the stock EJ exhaust, the EA one is kinda small for that motor, only thing is you will have to hack/fab up the EJ exhaust to the EA B-section exhaust. now that i said that....i'll go do it.... ~Josh~
baccaruda
that's cool to know... but some earlier EJ22 motors came with dual exhaust ports in the heads instead of single... FYI
Numbchux
the part about choking your car to no end, was a direct quote from a post from someone (I don't remember who...), who had that very problem. ran the EJ22 through the EA cat-back, and lost quite a bit of power. Uberoo
I am just using the Y pipe of the EA82 exhaust. After that is a foot of 2.25" pipe, then a glasspack, and then it will exit out one of the sides. And because the inlet to cat is the same ID as what I was planing on using...My motor has the twin port exhaust so I am going to attach the gutted EA Y pipe to those headers on the EJ... Uberoo
Never mind what I said about the EA82 exhaust. After looking at everything under and making a few cuts to see if the pieces would line up.It turns out that a section of the EA82 exhaust only look similar because it was slightly flattened. After test fit everything I found out that the EA exhaust pipe could fit inside the EJ pipe..Damn.back to the drawing board.Or maybe I can find someone parting out a legacy.
