Banging noise over speed bumps?

Recommended Posts

(i love this part)

Go back outside and count the bounces on all 4 courners of the car

(tries not to giggle)

Should I wear a silly hat and hum Yankee Doodle Dandy while counting the bounces? Actually, I went ahead and checked all corners and didn't detect any excessive bouncing that one would expect from bad shocks / struts, so I think I can rule that out. I think it's time to jack up the front end and start wiggling the wheels around. Thanks for the laugh, Nipper!

GD,

My mud guards are sound, but where are the leading rod bushings located? Thanks.

If you jack it up, you'll see a 1" thick round rod going generally backward from the control arm next to the ball joint to a plate where the transmission crossmember is located. The bushings are on the plate. Also make sure the bolts holding the rod to the control arm are tight.

Check the sway bar bushing at the control arm as well, and the control arm bushing itself at the engine cross-member.

I would look at ......the strut tops as well as the strut to knuckle interface.

GD

Assuming the other ideas aren't working, make sure you do go under the hood and check the top of the strut.

Don't forget to check the center nut on top of the strut. Pop the little black rubber plug out and make sure it's (the nut, not the plug) tight. If it's loose, it can sound a lot like what you describe.

something not really mentioned yet (sorry to add yet more to your list), but the sway bar can do odd things as well. one way to check, lie down so you can reach under the car into the suspension (probably with a light as well), and have someone rock the car back and forth pushing and pulling on the roof of the car to get a lot of body roll. touch each point the sway-bar touches (sway bar links - right and left, and sway bar bushings - right and left), and see if you can fel any shifting that shouldn't be there...really any at all. the sway bar is meant to twist, but nothing should have any real play in it.

The reason I thought of this is because someone just came in with an '06 Tribeca that made a horrible clunk when going over bumps...we rocked the car, and the sway bar bushings had been crushed so the swaybar jumped about a 1/4 inch each time the car rocked...not good.

Good luck anyways, suspension noise hunting can be incredibly frustrating...

Also just because the front is making noise, dont assume its the front, check the rear too.

I also had this thunking and replaced the ball joints and it went away for a while. I also replaced the struts all the way around at that time. The passenger ball joint looked like it was about to come appart. Lots of 3D movement. The drivers side was better but still had enough 3D movement to make me want to change it. I'll see if I can get a pic or video of them later tonight. Recently it started to come back with the same symptoms as yours, so if I find the culprit I'll let you know.
