bigger brake rotors for 99 leg

Recommended Posts

hey i do not like the brakes on this 99 leg, i think somethng is not quite right with them, i have the kyb ouback struts and the biggest tires i can get on here plus i am trying to get the 2 inch lift scorpion springs, my boyfirned think the bigger tires without bigger rotors are part of the problem too

anyway i am looking to put some decent upgraded bigger rotors and stuff on here, what does everyone suggest? or are the outback rotors bigger but would fit?

thanks for any suggestions and help!

WRX rotors work but then you need to upgrade to 16 inch wheels. You will need the calipers and brakets off the donor WRX. I'm not sure what your rotor size is but if memory serves me right the Outbacks are 10.2 inches and the WRXs are 10.9 inches. If you want bigger than that you can upgrade to ANY big brake kit for the WRXs. I just got a set of 02 RS rotors, calipers and brakets for my 98 Outback (For the fact I like to fly and brake at the last second). Only reason they are not on yet is due to the fact I don't have the 16 inch rims yet. Everyone I've spoken to on the various forums I visit say the stock Outback brakes are very good and the only reason to upgrade would be for lots of track use. Visit subaruoutback.org as they are very knowledgeable about the Outbacks and Legacy. You can visit sl-i.net as well for LOTS of Legacy info and upgrades as well as tips and tricks. Good luck with everything and be sure to post some pics when you are done with the lift.

Get good pads first. Some examples are Hawk HPS, EBC red and yellowstuff, Axxis Ultimate, and Carbotech Bobcat. I was running the hawks on my tiny 10.2" brakes and didn't have much fade after some pretty aggressive mountain driving. Fresh fluid and stainless steel lines will also help.

Unless you are overheating your brakes with the stuff listed above, there's no reason to go bigger for the sake of bigger brakes. They're just heavier and more expensive.

Anyway there are two common sizes that are bigger. 10.7" discs that are on the Impreza RS and 95-00 Legacy 2.5GT, and the 11.4" discs on the WRX (and a few other cars). They both use a two piston caliper but different brackets.

For the RS 10.7" brakes you don't need 16" wheels. newsoobdude, if you already have two pot front brakes (I think you do) the RS stuff is the same size.

Thanks for the info, now when I need to do my brake job I'll just swap out everything and wait on the rims.
