Cruise controle swap in OBS i need help

Recommended Posts

So I picked up a 97 OBS, great little car, but damn subaru didn't put fricken cruise control in the damn thing.

After much reading and searching I found some people that swapped in the cruise from other imprezas because all of the wiring is all ready in the car.

So here is where I am at.

vacuum actuator (from 98 OBS)

brake switch, the CC type.(95 impreza)

missing clutch switch (95 impreza)

CC main switch in (95 impreza)

MT CC computer (95 impreza and 98 OBS)

steering wheel stalk (98 OBS)

Everything is plugged in and accounted for.

It still doesn't work.

The light on the CC switch comes on when you push it and wont come on when the computer is removed.

The horn works so i know i have the stalk plugged in.

there is a fuse in the spot.

I have two computers I have tried. One from a 95 Impreza and one from a 98 OBS. Both are for MT

Both of them plug in just fine and both turn the light on the CC switch on. As far as I really can see the only difference between them is their mounting points.

I'm at a stand still right now.

I'm going to test my switches for the clutch and brake tomorrow.

Any one else give me some things to check.

Does any one know how to bench test the actuator.

does the different years of computers have an effect.

am i missing anything

Make sure the clutch is actually pushing the switch when it is up. There is a little tab on the top of the clutch pedal which is suposed to push the switch but it has a hole in it which should be covered by a little peice of rubber which falls off eaesily. A penney duct taped on this tab fixed it for me. Just something to check...

ok this morning i checked all of the switches.

the clutch

the brake

the steering wheel stalk

all of them check out. the clutch one was a little iffy so i took it apart and cleaned the contacts. then it worked great.

i then took it back out and tested it but nothing. tried the other CC computer and nothing.

the only things i can think is if the actuator is bad or the CC computer doesn't like the car.

I did check the little button on the clutch pedal and it was there. I even tested the switch while mounted and it worked great.

I'm at a loss.

any other ideas

You might want to see the wiring diagrams, with pin-outs, for both your car and the donor vehicle. I have one for 1995, but you also need 1997. Is the vacuum hose connected to the manifold?

ok i swung by subaru and picked their brain, well more their computers. According to them the kit for installing CC is no longer available. OK then how about the parts.

Well this is when i gets a little weird. According to their computer, they couldn't look up CC parts for an 97. They were there for a 96 and for a 98 but no 97. :banghead:

So I had them check on different parts.

The main power switch is the same between them all.

The steering wheel stalk changed when the steering wheel changed in 96 from the two button horn to the whole air bag being the horn.

The clutch switch is just a simple on or off kind of switch.

So is the brake. So no weird resistance issues there.

So that leaves the vacuum actuator and the CC computer.

Both of them right now are from a 98 OBS. I am just going crazy here. there is no reason that this thing shouldn't work.

Any more idea. Even if they sound stupid I'll try them. Well almost anything.

One difference between 1997 and 1998 Impreza models is the change from cable-driven speedometer to electronic. The speed sensor signal may be different between the two. But then a 1995 controller would have been more likely to work, and it didn't. Then again, there were three control units in 1995: for 1.8 MT, 1.8 AT and 2.2 AT/MT (same part). If yours is from 1.8, there might be enough difference too. You may still need a 1998 wiring diagram. A part number for the correct control unit can be found, but it's probably not worth it to buy a new one.

well that would explain the 98 not working.

the 95 did come from a 1.8 so i guess that throws that out the window too.

I sat down with the 95 and 97 wiring diagram and traced wires. There were a couple of things that were different. Not much but enough to make it not work. The main thing is the speed sensor was different.

Well I am just going to keep my eyes out for a 97 with CC. I'm sure they are out there, just need to keep my peepers open for one.

ok so i called every subaru dealer in the area and not a one could even order the CC computer. I am stuck finding it in the junk yard world.

Well I guess the search is on.

This isn't going to help much but I find it odd that I happen to have an 1997 MT cruise unit that I have not been using for 2 years. I promised it to someone else on this board already for cheap, but I won't go back on the deal.

Once I dig it out of the garage I will make a copy of the schematic and part numbers.

PS

It took me about 4 years to find the stupid cruise for a reasonable price in the first place.

yeah that would just be my luck.

part numbers would be nice. because when they look it up in the computer the dates jump right over 97. Kind of F ed up. But it still wouldn't have stopped me from getting the car if i knew this all before hand.

Well if he does back out keep me in mind. Or if he wants to make a quick buck let me know.

The part number for the kit for 1997 w. MT is H7010FA233. Found it on some old "blowout sale" list. Looks like the cruise was never installed at the factory and so there are no parts for it listed in the replacement catalog. It was sold as an accessory. The controller could still be ordered by p/n if you know it, but it will cost something like $200.
