MaroonDuneDoom
i had an EXTREME overheat, above the max on the guage, and was wondering what kind of damage could have been done. i know these little alluminum engines can't take she-aight for heat. what should i look at? GeneralDisorder
They can handle heat alright - it's the heads that can't. I've never heard of permanent damage by overheating other than cracking heads. GD
MaroonDuneDoom
what about gaskets and whatnot? i heard about head gaskets blowing.
Do It Sidewayz
if you get it that hot. I'll bet money you gonna blow a head gasket, or you did and that is why you blew it. they just don't get that hot for no reason. We've also melted a channel in the block instead of blowing the head gasket where they always blow. I seriously couldn't believe it. but there was like a 1/8 deep groove from the water jacket on #3 to the combustion chamber.
MaroonDuneDoom
i'm almost scared to rip into my engine. a mechanic friend told me not to bother with the whole head set because i will inevitably find a whole lot wrong with it. torxxx
you could have cooked your gaskets, cracked a head, burned your pistons.. EA82s are pretty tough engines.. I overheated mine several times, still runs fine
GeneralDisorder
This the same mechanic friend that said you can't lift a soob? Your engine is running yes? Then it's salvageable most likely. Probably blew a headgasket or cracked a head is all. You would have to get one insanely hot to actually hurt the block. The melting point of aluminium BTW, is 1220.58 degrees. If your cooling system was working even a little bit, you could not possibly reach that temp I don't think. Of course if the engine were run without any cooling system at all - possibly. But the thing would seize before it melted I think. GD
Meeky Moose
hehe, yeah it definitely woulda siezed before it got to that temp..
blaster88
See if your belt covers are melted. If they aren't, the overheat wasn't all that extreme.
