crazy D
what type of metal are Ea81 front hubs made out of nad are the cast or forged ? redrill to six lug and metals teacher recommends re-enforcing:)
subie_newbie
The hubs are cast iron. While the re-drilling process does 'weaken' the hub, I'd bet you can ask around and no one's had one fail from the drillings. The casting is pretty soft and I'd imagine you'd bend one before you'd crack it across one of the new or empty holes. Someone with a CAD system could easily do a FEA on it. Any bored drafters around? Phizinza
I think reinforcing is just over doing it. It is a good idea to grind the back of the hub where the new studs go in so they sit flat and then weld the studs in. I have a feeling welding more metal on will run the risk of unbalancing them and or softening them from the heat of the weld... I have never heard of one fail after being converted. Although Jibs (your related to him right?) had his new studs strip on him or something like that, but I used old studs from other hubs and they are fine. Oh, but one of my new wheel nuts stripped ( they are cheapies.)
