Compressor is making grinding sounds. I doubt that it's just empty.

I'll take it into my AC guys who are good, but have a tendency to charge retail when they can for parts.

Good source for Zexel 14D?

i might have an extra A/C compressor i can send you for $75 shipped. what engine is this off of? i'll check what i have.

if he's nice and it's just the clutch or bearings, they may be replaceable without disassembling the entire compressor and discharging it as well. i know people have done that before.

It's a 2.2 Auto LHD 97 Legacy, and the label says Zexel 14D.

I will look to see if the AC clutch mght be slipping. Is that user serviceable if so?

Thanks.

i have heard of people replacing the clutch and bearing before on the vehicle, but have'nt had to do it myself. i have replaced an a/c clutch on a honda compressor once, don't recall it being all that difficult with basic bag of tools and sockets. you might want to try doing a search here, i'm almost positive it's been posted before on here. search the old and new generation forums to see if you can find any info on those...i believe the bearing part numbers have been posted before as well. i don't recall seeing a bearing when i've taken a clutch off before, but i'd imagine it's behind the clutch or i'm altogether wrong and the bearing i'm thinking of is replaceable on the alternator???? pretty sure it's A/C though.

Here is a link to my personal experience with the AC compressor clutch bearing replacement on my Volkswagen Cabriolet.

Bearing replacement for the clutch assembly itself is possible without dumping the entire refrigerant side of the system. But this assumes you catch it BEFORE the clutch overheats to the point that the shaft seal to the compressor to leak and the clutch coil melts down.

AC shops here already pointed out that 1:10 chance the entire compressor shaft/bearing assembly is toast - it would be a miracle if a simple bearing change makes things right. In my case it is working pretty well for almost 10K miles.

Here is a very good write up I found on the clutch pulley bearing replacement.

And here is an interesting article about overall compressor repair.
