testy
Ive been beating the ************ outa my 94 Loyale lately, rally (throttle lift oversteer baby), 4x4 (cus it can), and jumps (cause its fun). Anyway, pretty much all things that will destroy and decent car.... And as expected things are starting to go wrong. 1st - My car smells like maple syrup and is leaking coolant from around the firewall. Ive been told it is the heater core, but the coolant seems to flow from the engine side of the firewall and not on the dash side. 2nd - Shifting into 4wd (push button, 5mt) and engine braking makes a loud and very deep rumble. Then when I shift outa 4wd a very loud clunk and a quick but violent jerk through the car. Im most worried about the heater core and the coolant leak because this is the car I drive to work everyday. And I dont need 2wd for that. On a plus side, I just found the jackpot for PUG wheels in Vancouver, CA and the lugnuts to go with em. PM me for information on that. Thanks. nvexplorer
Have you checked the hoses going to the heater core? They go right up to the firewall and might have spung a leak. My 4wd (93 Loyale) used to clunk and rumble until I put a new set of tires on all the way around. When I got her, she had different tires on the front and rear and the difference was enough to cause torque bind. Just make sure you have the same sized tires on the front and rear with close to the same amount of wear and you should be fine.
testy
Same size tires all the way around. The binding is getting worse, but the 4x4 still works.
idosubaru
check the coolant lines to the heater core. if it's leaking on the firewall it's more likely to be coolant lines that need replaced. if it is the heater core, bypass it for now until you can fix it. run an inlet hose straight to the outlet so there's no coolant getting to the heater core. better to not have heat than loose coolant and blow a headgasket or toast the motor. testy
Coolant issue is fixed, was a pin hole leak just before the clamp on the inlet hose to the heater core. Thanks for the solution. Now I must sort out the problem with the 4x4. I check the driveshafts, non are bent or loose. They both spin freely when 4x4 is not engaged and there seems to be no friction from the rear end. It seems the faster I go the rougher the clunk is when disengaging the 4x4.
mikeshoup
You say same size tires all around... Are they the same tread pattern and wear?

Its a pushybutton, which i hate because sometimes it likes to stick and then make me drive on tarmac with 4wheel on. That sucks. Anyways, The Clunk is kinda scarry but It hasnt been damaged from what I can tell. Did your car do this before??? Also my car has 255000 miles on this tranny. So.. its just getting broken in
testy
You say same size tires all around... Are they the same tread pattern and wear? Very slight difference in tread pattern. All the same wear.

Gloyale
Very slight difference in tread pattern. All the same wear. Different tread means different model/make of tires. $10 bucks says that is you're issue. Doesn't take much to get tension built up between the front and back. Driving slowly in reverse while disengaging helps quite a bit, but even with 4 new, matched tires there will still be a *clunk* Shouldn't be too severe though.
