Fatz
Hey all. im about to lift up my l series wagon and put some 31 mudz under her. I have ordered a 4" lift kit but can change it to a 6" in the next day or so. Has anyone here done a lift to squeeze 31s under an L before? If so what lift did you do to achieve this, and do you think a 4" will work? Thanx all for your time. Adam
Phizinza
Most here don't know what an L-series is, it's the 85 to 89 style for those who don't. I have seen a 6" lifted Brat with 30"s and seems the L can natrually take larger tires I'm guessing 6" with plenty of cutting will work.
Fatz
Cheers, my mate runs 30s on his brumby with a 4" lift. he said he could fit 31s, but wouldnt be very comfy. Was just curious if anyone knows with an 85-94 model.?
Numbchux
29s on a 4" lift requires a bunch of trimming, especially to allow the suspension to travel at all. 6" will probably still require some fender cutting....but it'll be a much better fit. 31s will REALLY hurt your gearing, and put alot of stress on axles though.... btw, we call them EA82s in the US. Phizinza
31s will REALLY hurt your gearing, and put alot of stress on axles though.... Pretty sure Fatz is running on a 4.44 VTD Auto or something like that. So, maybe it won't be so bad? Still, it's going to put a lot more strain on the torque converter. What can't a subie do with 28.5"s that it can with 31"s?
the_postie
if you're gunna run the ej driveshafts and awd box you can get another 30 to 40mm with springs without any ill effect to said driveshafts say a 4inch kit with raised springs[pedders] gives you 5 more clearance under the guards.A 2" kit with 27 rubs a little so 4" would give you 29' with rubbing so 31 =?.Ive only done the maths with tape measure and car. But this time im considering a manual 4.11 ej box. with the l series low range. If that doesnt work then ill go back to the auto. As for the tyre size difference, prolli nothing at all. I just wanna do something different to the rest. No real reason or anything. Not too many BIGger L series in Aus. None in tassie. Ill be running EJ Cvs up front with the coilover kit on my outback struts.
Phizinza
I just wanna do something different to the rest. No real reason or anything. . Good enough reason for me mate  I still think even with 4.11's you won't want to climb rocky slopes or things like that with 31"s. But for a sand rig 31"s would be awesome. You thinking 10.5" wide? Or wider?

You'll want a transfer case, your a/t 4.44 or whatever won't stand a chance against 31s. At least a 6 inch lift and lots of chopping and banging. Yours is a wagon? You'll need to do some serious beating behind the doors I bet. Your axles will be your new worst enemy unless you do a solid axle swap or something. the_postie
fatz, is this on the sedan or a wagon? What did mud rat run under his 5" lifted sedan? THE last time i heard he was having 5 or 6" strut tops made up. a 6"lifted L won't stand out much in Tassie. They look like a hilux coming down the road, maybe put some toyota badges on it.LOL

Phizinza
If you go with a manual EJ AWD box you might want to look into fitting the pinion and front diff of a 4.44 box into a Liberty D/R box running L series low range. This should work just as long as the pinion on 4.44 boxes is the same fitment onto the centre diff as the 3.9 box. This would help a LOT with your 31" tyres.
