Front half axle

Recommended Posts

Have replace the right side front half axle twice in 3000 miles on my 86 Brat. Noticed in replacing it the last time that the splines from trans to half axle werre a little loose. Is it possible that this looseness contributes to the early break down of the u joint in the half axle and if so what can be done. Any Ideas? Adrian

When I replaced the front axles on my 82 brat I noticed that the shafts were thicker than the rebuilt replacements. It seems that all other cars, except the brat, had smaller dia. shafts, which is apperantly the only ones that get rebuilt. I kept the brats axles and returned cores which were some junk ones that I got off my parts wagon/hatch car. I also now have a factory manual, and it does give different axle shaft specs for wagon/hatch etc,4x4,and brat...don't know if this is an answer to your question...the rebuilt pair I put on, one just failed the other day(boot split, vibration, grease all over wheel well) and I returned to auto-zone for a free replacement...keep those reciepts...rc

Larger diameter shafts and joints were used in all 4WD spec EA81's. It's not Brat specific.

The GCK's are redesigned useing better than original 4WD spec components and are completely new.

As far as I know, no one has ever broken one or had one fail. It wouldn't be easy.

Generally won't destroy a quality axle - cheaply rebuilt unit - yes. So will bad tranny mounts. The tranny mounts on EA81's are crap. Mounts should always be checked, but a quality axle won't be overly stressed from poor mounts. The axles are designed to operate at a variety of angles. Rebuilt units generally have welded cages and races that wear out rapidly due to poor tempering, and poorly machined tollerances (often done with a die grinder by eye ).

Thanks for the help Reveeen. You need a life!

I just ordered in GCK's for my EA82. At a hundered bucks a piece, they're really not that much more expensive than reman's. I go through axles like candy in the front, so I'm hoping the GCK's will hold up a lot better than the other's I've been using.
