Broken EA82T Wagon; Should I Buy it?

There's a local guy here w/ an EA82T AWD Wagon. He said he bought it from a familly member w/ a dead engine and wanted to put in an engine that is 2 years older, but could not.

 

How hard is it to swap N/A engines into turbo cars? Can anyone estimate the value of this car if i swapped the engine, cleaned the interior, straight body, and A/T AWD? (supposing everything else is in working condition)?

 

I am considering offering a lowball price if I like what I see, then fixing up the car and either using it for a short period of time, or selling it.

 

Let me know what you think; I know it's hard to come out making money w/ these cars, but I think I can get a really great price.

 

I'll prob. check it out tomorrow for more information.

Yeah, forget about making money from these old cars. Rather, focus on what you would like to have for yourself for a long-term car. Unless you just want a project to learn from, and break even on.

it will not bolt up to an EJ22 without an adapter and i wouldn't adpat an EJ22 to an auto trans.

 

not a good bet really, but it depends how much your time is worth. you can't really make enough on EA82 stuff to make it worth it. then you have the high possibility of lots of nagging issues...rust, stripped threads, exhaust studs coming out, brakes not working, etc.

 

i've swapped a non-turbo into a turbo. it wasn't very fun and the car still isn't running. though mine is the 87-88 transition year and i suspect some issues from that.

If this has the 4EAT, would there be a way to mate it to an EJ22? Or would an EJ tranny/Adapter be the only option in an '88?

 

You would need an adapter plate. And the TPS for the EJ22 outputs a different range than the EA82t. I think this could mess with the Trans Computer(TCU) and it may not respond right to throttle applications, downshifting and what not. Other than that it would work. Don't worry about the 4EAT being tough enough. If you are putting in a Non-turbo EJ the 4EAT will take it just fine.

 

Better yet put a full EJ driveline in. You already have 25 spline axles cause it's a turbo. And you have an MPFI fuel pump already too.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I just asked because I was reading some old posts and someone made the analagy that the 4EAT was like the EJ 4EAT w/ a diff. bellhousing.

 

There isn't the possibility that this car has a rear limited slip or center locking diff., is there?

LOL that may have been me before I discovered that unlike the 3at, the

4EAT has no seperate "bellhousing".

 

And yes there is a good possibility it has Limited slip rear. It will only have a center diff lock if it is a Fulltime MT. Automatics don't have a center diff so no locking needed.(should be controled by the TCU, but there is a method of "locking" the center of a 4EAT. Look in the USRM)

If you get an early Legacy 5SPD, you just need to get the matching rear diff for whatever car you're tranny comes from. Most Legacy 5spds are 4.11 ratio and will bolt up and uses the same axle stubs as EAs. You could use one of these diffs with a newer trans as long as the trans is also 4.11

 

Later models it gets more complex as the axle inputs changed on the diffs. So say a 99 forester diff, won't accept axles from an EA82, and Foresster axles won't go straight onto the EA either.

 

People have done hybrid axles using EA axles and outer joints and later model inners. Once you figure out which tranny you're going to use, the options become more clear.

As of now, what I am thinking is, if the car appears drivable (minus the engine), I most likely will purchase it and the EJ22 for cheap or not at all. If the Wagon has an LSD and other goodies, I just might get it to part it if there is no decent engine for it. I think I shall pass on it if the seller wants too much for the Wagon and EJ.

Can anyone tell me how much it typically costs to dispose of a junk'ed/parted car? (Not trying to scare enthusiasts, just thinking ahead . . . )

I just called em and they hauled it for free. They are gonna make money on the metal. If you are way out, miles away from the wreckers they might want some money, but not much.

Nice, that's good to know.

 

I checked out this guy's Sube a ways out of town. Scoped it: standard EA82 Wagon 3AT + mouse & mouse nest in engine bay. Anyways, he didn't know itwas non-turbo until I told him it was NA. I also told him that if the engine IS the issue, he could probably source a replacement and gave him a phone number for a parts guy. I asked about the Legacy engine he had mentioned, asked to contact the friend/owner, who then told me that I could take it for nothing if I like. So, I'll check it out after the weekend probably. No tranny according to him; body looked shot.

 

Now I still want an EA82T to swap an EJ22 into...:Flame:

 

P.S. The EA82 Wagon I looked at had the NICEST stock headlight housings I have seen on an old Sube.

The ECU and the engine wiring harness would be the only changes needed.

There are features like LSD, Rear Disk Brakes, 25 Spline Count, & an MPFI Fuel Pump that cater well to EJ22 swaps.
