Hey guys, I have an 85 subaru gl wagon ea82 with an auto trans. Well, it was shifting slow and acting up, so I checked the fluid and it was low, so I put some more in, and it went a little better. But its really laggy, so I pulled the tranny pan, thinking the filter was bad, and the screen is ripped, but I don't know why that would matter. I needed to go somewhere, so I put the pan back on and made sure the drain plug was good & tight, then went topside to put fluid in it, and it didnt drain; it acted like it was overfilled and wouldn't take any more, so I got back in and fired it up and put it in gear it didnt go :(. At this point I was like "damn", so I tried all the gears and nothing, so what could I have done ????? I HATE AUTOS AHHHH. Any info would be great, thanks, Rob.

I don't mean to be rude by doing this, but it would help in future posts if they could look more like this. So anywho, when you check autos, they are supposed to be running, and it sounds like you overfilled the pan. So, you should probably drain some of that fluid, start it and check again. What kind of fluid did you use? I checked mitchell, which is the program we use at the shop, and for that tranny its supposed to be dextron 2. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you can substitute dex 3 if you can't get any dex 2. Oh, and btw, I pm'ed you about this little dilemma.

I can only give you a suggestion and feel your pain, so I thought I would just toss you a bone:

I don't do Automatics either but once I was replacing a universal joint and inadvertantly pushed on the trany linkages with my foot or what ever, got the job done and the darn car wouldn't move.... so I crawled back under, wiggled the linkages to see if that would do somthing and found that I had moved some sticky-outie linkage thing on the side of the tranny and pushed in opposite direction and off I went.... this was not a Subaru but hey... you get the idea.

Doesn't seem like there was anything to invasive to cause this too happen so look at possibly something you unknowingly did...?

Let us know what you find out....

I have had vent tubes in different automatic transmissions get clogged with insect nests or whatever, and it can make fluid leveling very difficult.

Also, you didn't try to fill the differential, did you? There are two different dipsticks on the transmission, one takes gear oil, and the other ATF.

Good call. The differential and the Auto trans sections are seperated in these.

The differential fill hole is on the passenger side, and should get 80-90 gear oil or similar.

The trans dipstick is on the Drivers side, kinda behind the starter. ATF is filled down the tube with a skinny funnel or pump.

lol well thanks you ver much guys thats my problem i filled the diff not hte tranny thanks guys -----(damn trannys) Rob

Just make sure to drain and refill that Diff. Theres a big plug right in the bottom of it for draining. That ATF won't hurt it at all, but you don't want to run like that.

easy fixes, awesome!

save yourself the hassle in the future and don't bother replacing those "filters" of the screen type any more. i've pulled them out wih 200,000 miles and they're always spotless (i'm sure there's the anecdotal ones though). they just prevent anything from getting sucked up and it should come out with drain and refills. they aren't typical "filters" in the sense they really get dirty. so it's really a pointless exercise to replace them. just keep changing that oil and you're golden. (this isn't true with the newer gen stuff that has an external spin on filter obviously...but that's not until 1998 stuff).
