Really getting pissed at these 2.5's

I've got 2 apart on my garage floor, a 97 DOHC EJ25 out of an outback, and a SOHC EJ25 out of a forrester.

 

The DOHC has badly rusted and pitted cyl walls, the SOHC had a piston that blew the ringlands off. AND, previously unknown, it has huge gouges in one cyl wall. Like gouges you can feel through the paper towl you're using to wipe down the cyl's with ATF.

 

No big deal I think, I'll use one half of each block and see how it goes. Then I get bit by the thrust bearings, one is on the third main, the other is on the rear main.

 

How many POS EJ25's does it take to build one good one?

 

I've got a sea of EJ22 + EJ25 parts

 

I'll see about collecting another EJ25. There's enough with blown headgaskets kicking around.

same amounts as any collection of POS engines. Sounds like the DOHC was poorly stored (not the engines fault), and only god knows what happened to blow a hole in the piston on the SOHC, though that is usually a bad case of engine knock.

I'm picking up another EJ25 tommorow morning, for 25 bucks. The valves on the drivers side were closed so that side should be good. The passengers side may be done, none of the plugs were rusty, so there's hope. The engine was left without a throttle body and injectors, so there was pletny of ways for water to get in, there's even a puddle in the intake. You can't loose for 25 bucks.

how are you finding so many people that store these things like that? rusted, pitted cylinder walls is not normal for any subaru...even any subaru engine that blows a headgasket. subaru's are notorious for having near perfect cylinder walls and crosshatching at 200,000+ miles. it is hard to keep the cylinder walls from rusting, they will rust even if oiled and sitting in a garage. it's really annoying, i've had it happen too. i hate reapplying the oil, i just want to store it and let it set. either a very controlled environment or wrapping them is needed i guess.

Well, the block I picked up yesterday turns pretty smoothly, so I may be lucky. I'll pull the heads off and return them to the guy, he wants them so he can send them out to the machine shop and have a set on hand for the next car that comes in with blown head gaskets.

You definitely can't use one half of each block unless you have them line bored. The block halves are mated to each other and machined together.
