**all you experts** Transmission gearing differences? (1989/1986/1983)

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody,

Right after I lifted my brat (and put 29" tires on it) I was confronted with some "gearing issues"

I hear LOTS about everyone doing 5-speed swaps out of the ea82 series cars, but is this just going to get me a 5th gear? (I DONT need 5th.... with 29s Im only running 2k rpms at 55mph!)

I have ALSO heard something about the early ea81 D/R trannies having a lower 1st gear? (THIS would be nice....as I wheel it a lot)

Long and short of it ......

-My brat is an '86.

-I have a 1983 D/R trans

-I have a 1989 ea82 D/R trans

What are the benefits/ gear differences?

Thanks much!

81/82 have lower 3rd and 4th.

83+ are all the same so the two EA81 trannies you have are the same.

EA82's are basically like having an 81/82 4 speed but with an extra overdrive gear. Way preferable, and the linkage is much happier too.

Personally, myself and many others have chosen the EA82 trannies for a variety of reasons. There's not any drawbacks to it other than making it fit properly. They are an improvement on every level.

 Thanks Connie!

Some folks solve everything with the scientific method.

......I think that is the "get 'er done" method:headbang:
