rzirker
99 Manual trans is shot. They are hard to find and pricey. Can I rig a 98 Forester 5-speed or an 00-01 5 speed tranny into it?? There are lots of them and they're cheap. Maybe have to take 4 of the engine bolts out? Anyone tried swapping one out? Swap swap. Thanks for any ideas. SuBrat84
In the 99 (motorswap) I did it only had 4 bolts anyway.. you've got my vote that the trannies will swap.. especially since it's a manual.
86BRATMAN
The tranny should swap out. You will have to contend with the 8 bolt v. 4 bolt though. Make sure the final drive matches as well. If you can't verify get the rear diff as well.

DerFahrer
The tranny out of a 98 Forester should be 4-bolt. Everything past that should be an 8-bolt.
idosubaru
make sure the final drive ratio didn't change between years either. probably didn't, but you want to be sure.
rzirker
Put a 2000 5-speed in and it worked fine. So glad. Rear end is the same in all Foresters through '04. Also want to mention an engine swap that a friend did, 95 2.2 into a 98 Forester, worked fine too. Noticable lack of pep though. Thanks for the comments and suggestions.
