Virrdog
So my car went through the EGR valve solenoid problem dealio. I fixed it with a resistor. Everything was fine and dandy for quite a while. Then the CEL start coming back on once in a while. Then it went steady. I figured my quickie job with the resistor was not cutting it, so I redid it last night with shrink wrap and real connectors and the whole bit. I get everything installed and the light just stays on. Not a problem I think, since it probably needs reset. Well, it doesn't work using the connectors. I check the codes just to make sure it was code 34 again before I do a battery reset. Nope. Code 55. EGR temperature sensor or circuit. I frustratingly try to look it up on here but EGR and 55 are both too short to search for (hint: search for "code 55" with the quotes). I read up on it being a California emissions only code, really a phantom code, blah blah blah. I do the battery reset this morning. Check engine light goes off. I drive a mile down the road and the CEL pops back on. Read the code... Stupid Code 55!! What do I do now? Can I check to see if my car has a EGR temperature sensor?? Gloyale
If we are talikng about the 89 in you're heading with SPFI you should have an EGR temp sensor.
GJTaranto
What wattage rating resistor did you use? Maybe it burned out and sees it as a open circuit, hence the light.
Virrdog
Yeah, sorry. 1989 Subaru GL 4x4 SPFI Wagon Supposedly only the california emission models got this sensor, not the federal emission ones? If someone could point out where this sensor resides I'd greatly appreciate it. My code 34 is staying away. I have a set of resistors wired up to net ~64 ohms, the closest I could get it to 68. Gloyale
FSMs are not clear on this, but here what I can infer. wiring diagrahm show the sensor connected to # E34 of the harness. However, when you folip to the pictures showing the locations of the connectors, no #E34 is shown. Also the component location diagrahms omit it as well. What I can say is that The connectors are labeled in groups by location. And connectors E31,E32,and E33 are located at the rear portion of the intake, near pitch stopper. It should be a 2 pole connection with a White/red wire and a Black wire.
Virrdog
Ok, I did some more digging. There is definitely not an EGR temp sensor on the car. I saw the '89 FSM and saw where it would be located, its completely bare where the sensor would be. I checked the codes with the green connectors and it spits out 55 with the diagnostic. When I check the codes with the white connectors it shows only Code 34. How do I purge this demon out? I unhooked the battery and hit the brake pedal once befor, this works almost instantly on the Legacy's (I cleared someones code the ODB1 reader could not even clear on the highway before). Is there more to it for the GL's? I drove for a mile and the light came back with the same flashing 55 code in diagnostic. Quickie Poll: So who on this board has actually had a code 55?? And what made it go away?
