rlhodges1
Hi. I Have This Turbo Wagon And Just Got A New Front Crossover Pipe. The Old Pipe Was Busted And Very Easy To Remove. Now I Have A Like New Turbo Cross-over Pipe And I Have No Wiggle Room To Ease It Up Hole. I Have Removed All The Exhaust Bolts And Bent Down The Two Mounting Tabs And Removed The Exhaust Studs From The Heads. Still No Wiggle Room. Today Im Going To Jack Up t:Flame: He Front Of The Gl-10 And See If I Can Snake The Pipe Down The Grotto For A Fit. Please Advise Any Ideas.....thank you

Tosh
unbolt the two 14mm engine mount bolts jack up the engine/transmission. that will give you the clearance you need.
joostvdw
something I did, something that might not be 100% safe is putting the original scissor style subaru jack on a tile (to lift it about 1 inche) and then jack it all the way up (this is real high!) I then got enough room to snake the uppipe up and over the crossmember. if you can do it any other way, please do, as my method puts the car very high and even with jackstand under it, it's still not the best/safest way to do it, but it does work. sub_speed_559
i simply bought the highest lift jack i could find (23" for 59$ at sears) and flipped the manifold upside down, but i also cut some of the heat shielding off and i had to get the front wheels about 8 inches off of the ground to have enough clearence to get it in, or flip it i should say.........i broke my stock pipe off where it mounts onto the turbo.....i have had to do this 3 times (once when it broke, twice when the first weld broke, and third time when i brain farted when doin the head gasket)............btw the safest way is to get a couple buddies around and tell them to take time out of their busy beer drinkin schedule and put jack-stands underneath so your head doesn't get smashed if the jack slips......but yeah.....good luck
Gloyale
Why is everyone talking about lifting the whole car up? just for access under the car? To remove/install the crossover pipe, you have to unbolt the 2 engine mount bolts on bottom of crossmember. unbolt the pitch stopper above the trans then Lift the Engine Either with a jack from underneath with a wood block on the pan. or lift from above with a hoist. But just lifting the car doesn't give you any more clearance between engine and crossmember. Unless you're lifting the whole car by the oilpan? that would be bad, a sure way to overstress and tear the rubber engine mounts

joostvdw
the problem is not that the space between the engine and crossmember is too small, but you have to rotate the crossover/header/uppipe to manouvre it through that space, in order to rotate the crossover pipe you either need it on a lift or jack it up way high. Right, but if you increase the size of that gap you don't need to rotate it to such an extreme degree. I'm sure when I did it it was on jackstands, but not crazy high at all. Just for convience to lay underneath. edit: IIRC i had the oil pan off for a reseal at the same time(since I was lifting the engine), so this may be the reason I did't have issues
Caboobaroo
Like a few folks have said, remove the 2 - 14mm engine mounts->crossmember nuts, put a 2x4 on the oilpan and slowly jack the engine up until it won't go any higher. You want to jack it almost to that spot, just enough to rotate the engine just a hair to the driver side (to elevate the passenger side cam tower) and slide it in carefully. If you're quick with removing an EA82T like I have become, I found its much easier to remove the engine, replace the crossover pipe and reinstall the turbo (will give you better access to all the hoses and such) and drop it back into the car.
