calazo
Guys, I'm having a lot of power issues with my 1991 Legacy 2.2 M/T AWD (it runs good only when the car has no cargo or people besides me. Based on your experience, which mods can help boost power/torque best? (other than a Turbo, that is)... Thanks...
NoahDL88
It sounds like it just needs a tune up, check your plugs and wires, fuel filter and air filter, simple problems usually require a simple answer. After that you're gonna have to spend money, sure a bolt on exhaust will get you a bit, but without cams or an intake to support it its useless, so unless you just want a tune up you're looking at spending a couple grand to make any appreciable power increase. Try a tune up, if that doesn't work i'd try a compression check, and make sure that all your fluids, in the tranny, rear diff and oil are between the lines
offroadsubaruguy
i have done a few mods to my 90 wagon, but even when there are people in the car i can still tell that it doesnt go quite the same..... it might just be that its an old motor, dunno, but anyway, heres what i have done. i started with an aftermarket intake for a 2.5, then borla header setup with a stromung track pipe, eliminating the first cat, a better flowing muffler, and then a lightweight flywheel. noticable power gains in the mid rpms. i still need to do the rest of my exhaust which is going to be aftermarket mid pipe and muffler for a legacy 2.5gt. it will need to bee shortened some, but my exhaust diameter will then be the same size the whole way through making for more flow..... really there arent many ways to get more power out of the 2.2, you just need to get creative. my next mod will require an engine rebuild as im going to replace the crank with that of a 2.5 crank, as well as the heads, and then some aftermarket cams. its all about how you spend your money, but iff you really want more power, and you dont mind swaping out motors, i would just swap out the 2.2 for a 2.5, just keep your wiring and sensors, and it will work...... just remember, subarus are like legos, any part will fit on any car.. just get creative.
