AWD Loyale?

Firstly, allow me to apologise for what must seem like a very obvious question to most of you.

I have a 1994 Loyale wagon 5spd pushbutton 4WD and would like to swap in an AWD/FT4WD instead. So my question is this: Is there another AWD trans from an EA82 car (other Loyale, XT, ect) that will drop right in, or is it possible to use an AWD trans from a newer car such as a Legacy with minor modifications?

This car has been so fun to drive during the winter, but summer with only FWD is torture.

I hear ya! I can't stand FWD....and if you don't get offroad much, the 4WD is pretty useless.

 

anyway, the newer trannies cannot be used without swapping to the newer engine too (which, I'd highly recommend....but that may be a bigger project than you are looking for).

 

Any turbo EA82 *could* have a FT4WD tranny. they all (well...the 5-speed manuals anyway) have a locking center diff, so you won't lose the full-lock capability. the RX had a dual range FT4WD version. cool idea, but in my opinion, the application of the idea fell short. the gears are so short, that it's rather pointless....

 

anyway, to do the swap, you'll need axles (the turbo trannies have 25 spline inner stubs instead of the N/A's 23), shift linkage, the vacuum solenoids/lines (mounted to the drivers side strut tower) and some electrical work to make the center lock work, and the rear diff (turbos use a 3.7:1 Axle ratio, compared to the N/As 3.9).

 

 

it's not exactly a simple swap...as many things will need to be swapped to make it all work. BUT, no fabrication will be needed. everything is a direct bolt-in.

Actually, the difflock uses the same solenoid setup, actautor, linkage is the same. He could simply install the FT 5spd and use the 4wd button on his shifter to active the difflock. No modification required.

of course! I knew that, I got my center difflock stuff from a PT4WD loyale....Thanks for the corrrection

 

so yea, if you're going from a Push-button PT4WD car to a single range FT4WD one, the linkage, vacuum solenoids, and wiring won't need to be changed. you might need to be a bit creative about the wiring off the actual tranny (neutral switch, reverse switch, 4WD switch...).

Wow, I feel alot better... and alot worse.

I had the chance to get a complete drivetrain and engine from a turbo XT for 180$ which I was told had awd. HOWEVER I looked at it and at a glance assumed someone had been mistaken and it was just another PT4WD and therefore forgot it. Now it's crushed and gone.... oh well, if there was one there should be more.

Would anyone in the North Dakota/Manitoba (or other Canadian provinces) have these parts for sale? One other question: is the driveshaft length or splines different for FT and PT? Also are the rear axles the same or different for a turbo 3.7 or N/A 3.9 diff?

the driveshafts are the same as long as they're both Manuals (I think all the EA82 body styles had the same wheelbase....someone please correct me if I'm wrong). the driveshaft for an auto will slip right into the trans, but will come up a few inches short.

 

rear axles are the same aswell.
