Replacing rear wheel bearings, now what?

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I am getting ready to replace the rear wheel bearings on my 93 awd impreza wagon, picked up the bearings, inner and outer seals. Anything I should know before I start? I have done numerous wheel bearings on trailers but never on a car. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.:)

AWD or FWD??

Rear hub of 2wd is just complete hub with bearing easy to change

dunno about awd though

to rverdoold:

I think I read

"93 awd impreza wagon"

I am not positive about the early Imps but..

This may involve the use of a press or what they

call "the hub tamer"

Kind of a press that mounts on the hub/ trailing arm.

I would get some form of manual--

for torque values

if nothing else.

I think this quite a different animal than simple "punch out the old races and hammer in the new", as with double 2 piece roller bearings.

The bearing needs to be pressed in an out with a press, either with the entire knucle off the car or as stated above, with the special 'hub-tamer' ($$$), while on the car.

It is critical that NO pressure be applied to the inner race, of course.

For the rear, I think it is easier, no balljoint to remove. There MUST be complete threads devoted to the entire procedure. Myself, I'm waiting until I move to the new place before I buy a small press to handle just such jobs.

If you can get the lateral link bolt out, you're home free. I had to cut it off and replace both lateral link bushings in the process. If you get it out, put some antiseize on the bolt where it goes in the bushing collars and the knucke.

I had a hub tamer and it was a breeze! Well worth the investment in my opinion, especially with a Subaru in your stable. After I replaced the loud rear wheel bearing, i can now hear that the front left one is also making some noise.

The hub tamer or press might be some bucks$$ but it couldn't be as much as having it done. I was at a tire shop today for some other stuff, and just out of curiosity I had them give me a quote on doing the rear bearings, they wanted $534.00, I about fell over, they were charging double just for parts and another $250 in labor. I also searched the board quite a bit and didn't come up with a lot. The Chiltons manual shows a press for removing the bearing, I'll probably go looking for one tommorow.
