mdjdc
I am in the process of replacing the head gaskets on an ej25 DOHC engine and I was wondering if I need to pull the cams off before I remove the heads from the block? I was reading the Haynes manual and it says to remove the cams, but they do not seem to be in the way of the head bolts so I was wondering if the removal was really necessary? By the way, I am using the Subaru metal gaskets for replacement. Thanks for your help. Mike
nipper
you ARE going to send the heads out to a mchine shop to be checked for flatness and to be resurfaced yes? Personally, I would have a valve job done too, so yes. nipper
tomson1355
Mike, Yes, you have to remove the cams before the head bolts. The cams are in the way of the head bolts. Tom

mdjdc
Pulled the heads and the cams only to find out that one of the exhaust valves is burned. Off to the shop for resurfacing and a valve job. Hope to have the heads back by next thursday and then I can put the engine back together.
