m_sub Posted December 2, 2003 Share Posted December 2, 2003 Hi gang. Seems like I don't get around here as much anymore, but I've got a question that's stumping me. Problem: Key in the ignition...turn the key to forward start position...CLICK...kills the dash lights, no start. Vehicle: 1986 Soob wagon, 1.8 L Carbed, MT, 4x4. Background: I'm finishing off the CCR Inc. motor install (probably the slowest install in history!!) Previous to the motor going in I had a bad ignition switch that wouldn't spring back and thus the starter remained engaged unless you turned the key back a notch manually. So I have replaced that with a switch from my parts pile. Last night it did work enough to crank on the starter, never could get 'er to turn over though. Is it possible my battery doesn't have the goods to crank it up? I charged it overnight but it is old and might not be up to the task. Any other parts you suggest I check? Alternator? Starter motor? I'm anxious to hear this motor fire up so any help is appreciated. Formerly magnificent_subaru on the old board, just shortened now to m_sub, it still is me. Hope everybody is doing great out there. Having swapped it over for the install also not sure it isn't off a tooth, resulting in the not wanting to start condition. Some people shouldn't have tools. MilesFox Posted December 2, 2003 Share Posted December 2, 2003 somewhere there is a relay that sends power to the small tab on the top of the starter. you can jump the starter from there to see if it works. i like to run a push-button switchc to the terminal, the key just turns the car on. m_sub Posted December 3, 2003 Author Share Posted December 3, 2003 Yup, buzzed the terminals with a scotchbrite disc and some wd-40. Wanted to fire up immediately! Thanks to northguy. Either I always miss the easy stuff or it pays to have another set of brain cells around. Man that car purrs like a kitten now. Gotta do some more buttoning up and install the rear diff again.
