Play in tranny main shaft

Recommended Posts

play side to side or backwards and forwards?

Either way I think it shouldn't be there. But if it wasn't making a problem, then it would just be a waist of time and a pain to replace it.

play side to side. wouldn't be a pain, car is under the knife, engine is out and now is the time to replace the tranny if need be.

I would be interested if anyone out there has a tranny not in a car maybe you could see how tight the main shaft is for me.

There is a tiny bit of play in the tranny I've got here. That dfoesn't mean it's normal, but I'd say if there are no signs of fluid loss around the seal then you are fine. I think any trans with 100,000 plus miles will have some play.

anyone else think a little play is okay?

Well, I would KILL for a little play right about now... but when it comes to your gearbox, I would have to know how much play. What kind of "gap" is created by this play at the exit point of the shaft? IE, not how much does the end of the shaft move side to side, but how much does the shaft move from the inner race of the bearing?

My old one had heaps, at least 1mm side to side, and only problem was that it was rattley, although i think that was a problem further back in the box. Replaced it with a lower mileage one with about 150,000kms on it - it still has a fair bit of play (you can just see it) and runs fine. If the gearbox wasn't noisey, and isn't leaking excessively, i'd would just leave it. My rattley old crap one took a beating for about 4 years before i got around to replacing it, and it never did anything else other than make noise.
