XT6 power steering fluid?

Recommended Posts

It has been said that the power steering fluid is specific to this car. I am looking for those who might know differently by actual product knowledge or by putting in something else and having it work OK. It has also been said that there is about 10 quarts left in the country from SOA. Is this true too?

thanks

Lewis

Look what I found half way down the forum...

Just about all the knowledge of the XT6 power steering fluid lies in that thread. No one on xt6.net besides Dima ever reported experimenting themselves with different fluids. As GD said, if you can spec the fluid, you can find a replacement for it.

Its been said that back then Powersteering fluid wasnt up to snuff with quality, so subaru made a higher quality stuff and slapped a huge price tag on it. there are a few people who have been running straight Dex III or PS fluid for years with no problems, todays fluids are just as high of quality as the old Subaru PS fluid.

Not "a few". We've only heard of good stuff from one. Dima in NZ. Haven't heard back from anyone else running ATF Dexron III.

The XT6 PS fluid is mineral oil based. VW did this years before, also mineral oil based.

While it's true that a can of it is ridiculously expensive, IF you have no leaks, that one can will last the life of the car (or you).

Given the difference in the base material, I'd think Dexron might be damaging to the internals.
