check engine light

The "check engine light" for my '99 Outback (2.5 liter) is on...does anybody have instructions for determining what the error code is, so I can have some knowledge about what the problem may be?

 

Is it even possible to determine the source of the error myself, or is special equipment needed?

Step 1 start car

Step 2 drive to autozone (or some other chain store that does free scans)

Step 3 go into store and tell them your CEL is on

Step 5 tell us the codes

Your Subaru is too new for the flashing light that blinks a numerical code so you could parse through a handful of codes that listed your car's ailment(s). As of '95 (at least for the Outback Legacy) cars have a lot more to talk about and therefore you need an electronic gadget to plug into the OBD II (on-board diagnostics) connector under the dash and read the code for you. By '96 all cars were required to have this. Lots of options for gadgets, search this site or go to Autozone, they'll do it for you during daylight hours.

In Wisconsin, Advance Auto Parts will read the codes for free.
