so I may of forgotten to label my o2 sensor wire/plug when I unhooked it from the hanress and I MAY of cut off the plug for it if so can anyone tell me what color the o2 wires/wire would be or what the plug looks like (i was smart and have been saving all my cut plugs)

OR if I'm really really lucky could you tell me if its one of these plugs that I DO have left.

plugs.jpg

also :D do I have this plugged in right

do all 3 of those plugs that ARE pluged in come in threw the hole in the middle of the firewall ? or does one of them come from the fender area harness? (the one thats not plugged in, in my hand, is from the fender harness)

thanks a ton in advance guys.

also if I'm understanding my wiring diagrams and whatnot correctly. Everything that comes in that middle firewall grommet and then goes to the passenger side of the car. IS removable as in its all heater plugs and what not.

also something that I haven't been able to find out anywhere how much/if any of my STOCK wiring do i remove ? ie do I just leave everything as is and just add in the ej control stuff ? or do I need to pull my stock ecu.

You can pull your stock ecu, as its no longer needed. But the rest of the car's wiring will stay.

That grey four wire plug in pic one, looks to be for your o2 sensor.

Sweet thanks for saving my bacon. what about my old 2 plug EA engine wires ? can I pull those with the ecu ? I was just trying to figure out how I was gonna fit all the ej wires with that in the way :P

I would imagine it would be more trouble than its worth to try and strip out the ea engine stuff. It is spidered into the harness just like the ej donor harness. If you stripped out everything you didn't need from the ej harness you should be able to get it all tucked away with some creativity. A few people has left the ej harness un the spare tire well of the car for troubleshooting on initial start up, and then got things buttoned up after it was running.

as mentioned, the gray 4-pin plug on the left of pic 1 is the 02 sensor wire.

the 3 plugs are plugged in correctly, those are your crank and cam angle sensors, and knock sensors. they come through the center of the firewall on the legacy, and can come up through the hole behind your drivers' side strut tower on the EA82. along with the MAF, and 02 sensor wires.

I could be wrong, but the one you're holding looks like the Master Cylinder fluid level plug.

you don't have to remove the engine control stuff from the EA82.

I did, and it made for a much cleaner install in the end, but added quite a bit of work, and now my right front turn signal doesn't work (ditto on the horns...). the biggest reason I did it, is my loyale was an AT....so there was a bit more wiring (only a 3AT though....so mostly just stuff for the dash and shifter).

I managed to leave the EA harness routed through the side of the car and crammed the EJ harness through the same hole and up the fender next to it. I just cut a chunk out of the rubber grommet, and I'll use some silicone or something to reseal it after the car's proven reliable.

sweet thanks guys! since I'm not using AC or cruise controll all of the plugs over on that side (passenger) of the EJ harness can also be removed too right ?

only reason I wanted to cut out some of the EA stuff was to clean up the area around the battery a bit where all the engine plugs are for my EA82 harness.

ugg I just wish I had the $$ for my adapter plate and transmission now.

sweet thanks man I wasn't sure if any of the relays over there where needed but I guess I only need those 2 (ignition/fuel) relays so if its overthere then bye bye.

so I don't need my ecu to control any of my ea82 heat/defrost stuff ?

ugg I accidently cut the big shielded wire for my o2 sensor. I stripped it down soldered the shielded wire back together and connected the core wire up hopefully that will be good.

things are stripping away fast now. the big black wire with a red stripe that goes to my fuel pump relay do I leave that long and send it back down to my fuel pump when I put everything back together?

I'm having troubble figuring out which wires are the ones i need for my dash (check engine, oil, tach, speed, temp, etc) these are the plugs that go to the EJ22 dash harness right ? anyone know where I can get a pinout ?

tcu wires = removable ?

Yep, those you can completely remove from the harness. TCU stands for "Transmission Control Unit" and unless you're running an EJ22 auto tranny you can remove them.

and if those aren't them then which ARE the wires for the gauge cluster ?

Lemme trot out to the garage to check my harness and see which are left over to go to the dash. Just a sec...

Okay, here's the skinny. Besides the wires going from the ECU to the engine bay and control relays, these wires go to the dash:

Starter Switch - Blue Red

ECU Backup Power - Yellow Red

Coolant Temp Gauge - Whilte Blue

Oil Pressure Idiot Light - Green White

Check Engine Light - Red Yellow

Tach - Black Blue

Vehicle Speed Sensor - Green Black

Clutch/Neutral Switch - Light-Green Yellow

Hope this helps...

TCU = tranny control....if you're not using the EJ 4EAT....you won't be using those. and an unplugged wire = a cut wire, except ones alot messier!

easiest way to find the dash wires, is with an ECU pinout (like the one included in the writeup). find what you're looking for, find the pin, trace the wire, and mark it.

  • 3 weeks later...
anyone know where I can find a pinout of my stock EA82T GL-10 wiring ?

'89 Service Manual - Part 1

'89 Service Manual - Part 2

-or-

http://mshoup.us/docs/fsm/

Both have the same info, just different sources. The .pdf files are partial copies of the '89 FSM, but have all the needed info for the swap. The wiring schematics are on the last few pages of Part 2.

so I know what wires to connect to the ones in the handy dandy list pisces_0 gave me ?

Remember, the wires and wire colors I noted above were from the EJ22 wiring harness. You'll have to find their match to the stock EA82 wiring. Also, my wiring harness is from a '92 turbo Legacy and there's a chance your wire colors may be different. In the end, it's just a matter of stripping down the harness to the bare necessities and going through it wire by wire.
