vss is vehical speed sensor, i think on the ej cars have two, i tihnk. one for hte speedometer and the other for the tcu or ecu, not 100% though.

The VSS will be coming from your speedo, not sure exactly about which ones on an ea82 car. But look there.

You will throw a cel for the nuetral switch if you don't hook it to something. A modified clutch switch from a loyale would suffice. Just something to tell the ecu that you are in neutral at some point in time will keep the cel at bay.

The early ej22 vss is in the speedo as well, it will only have a second vss if it is an awd auto tranny. In which case it won't matter, because the tcu will not be in the equation.

yes you need a neutral switch, and yes your car should already have one. There should be a lockout switch on the trans or clutch used to keep you from starting the engine in gear, you can just use that. Alternately, you could wire in a brake light switch onto the clutch pedal and use that to simulate neutral.

Ok, so last night everything was hooked up except the nuteral switch and the VSS wire. The car would crank but would not fire ( checked and there was no spark) would the VSS or the nuteral switch let the car be cranked over but no spark?? Is that how the nuteral switch keeps the car from turning over?? Just by not giving it spark??

And one more thing while I tried to start it last night, I noticed that the Tach would fly all the way past red line and then go back the zero?? Is this because those two wires werent hooked up?? Or will it just do that now on start up??

Thanks for the help, I just need a little more and this bad boy will be RUNNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

no, I don't have a neutral switch or VSS hooked up in my car. runs awesome. does throw CEL codes for them.....but I don't have the CEL wired into the dash, so I don't have to look at it unless I want to

that's just weird....I'll have to check the diagrams and stuff....My car doesn't do that, and I've never seen any other older subaru do that (the new STis and whatnot do some goofy thing like that when you turn on the ignition....).

Ok the problem im having is im not getting power to the coil or the second yellow wire to the fuel pump relay, but the fuel pump cycles with the key on. I dont have any of the alternator wires hooked up just a big battery does that have something to do with it. So I have no Spark at all right at the coil!!

Im culeless??

well ive been think of way this thing wont start and I was think about how i wired my fuel pump. the fuel pump i used was out of a fuel injected subaru, it had a red and black wire coming from it and i figured that the red was power and the black was ground. the fuel pump is working i can here it cycle when the key is on, but if i had those wires wrong would that maybe way im not getting power to the coil??

What do you mean, right now i have the wiring hooked up which numbchux did for me, and everything is hooked up but the three alternator wires. the wierd thing is the car didnt have a alternator when i bought it and i drove it home. so thats way i dont thing that it has anything to do with the alternator not being hooked up??

With the swap, you can either use the stock ea starting system. Or run the ej ecu's stating system.

If the ecu isn't getting signal from the clutch switch it won't allow the motor to start. If you are using the ea system, it will still crank and not start.
