daeron Posted August 5, 2007 Share Posted August 5, 2007 im gonna go out on a limb and say that the black w/ white stripe wire, and the big white wire, and swapped in that photo. The biggest wire coming off an alt is usually the charging wire, which should connect to the fusible link block. On the stock GL alternator, this wire was the wire that had a ring terminal on it as opposed to the two wires in the T plug. It's "going out on a limb" because i don't KNOW this.. but typically the wires on an alternator follow the same rules from car to car, depending on type of alternator setup used... Cougar Posted August 5, 2007 Share Posted August 5, 2007 The large white wire, which is the alternator output wire does indeed go the large fusible link. The small wht/r wire should tie the warning light in the dash and the other black/wht wire is for the regulator circuit which I assume is internal to the alternator. The alternator can normally run very warm or be hot to the touch. The battery should be in good condition and fully charged. If the regulator wire has a problem and shows a voltage significantly lower than the battery voltage the alternator will put out a high charge thinking the battery is low. This will cause problems to the system if that is the case. I would resolder that wire connection in the picture and tape the connection. That needs to be isolated from ground. No offense...but that is a ugly splice connection. Make sure the fusible link connections are clean and tight since any resistance there will cause heat to build up. That is a Picture that numbchux sent me of how he has his wiring done on his car. I just followed what he did, the alternator and wiring are hot to the touch but not to hot to touch(it was hotter then it should of been). My battery is old and I had to jump it and thats when I reliased that the alternator and wiring and fusable link where hotter then normal. So with that said what do you think?? pinksock Posted August 8, 2007 Author Share Posted August 8, 2007 ok, my alternator wiring is still getting hot?? but Its charging the battery fine?? So I guess its fine. But I took my car out for its first ride around the block(a VERY short ride) and when I give it gas It make a very bad rattling sound right under the shifter?? it almost sounds like its coming from the 4x4 shifter?? Cougar Posted August 9, 2007 Share Posted August 9, 2007 The battery may be causing the alternator to work harder than it should. I would have the battery load tested to check the condition.
