cobcob
Bought an '88 GL-10 Turbo wagon from rlhodges on this forum just the other day... Needs some work, seems like maybe a lot of vacuum leaks, exhaust work, possibly a head gasket... All told I'm pretty dang happy with it though! Photos uploaded here and NO! 1 Soob is NOT enough... theres another arriving as soon as the titles get sorted out
misledxcracker
Ahhh... thats a sweet wagon... I have a soft spot for the GL-10s...
thealleyboy
Brings back memories...I had an 89 GL turbo (aka "Alleywagon '04") that looked just like that one. Wasn't a 10, but was identical mechanically. 1989 was the best year for the EA82 series IMO. Unfortuanately, you probably will need a backup Sube, cause those turbo's are so trouble-prone. {hint find an 88-94 with SPFI as your daily driver} But when you get that turbo right, you'll have something to be proud of. Great score, and good luck!! John

cobcob
The other Soob I'm getting soon is a 1990 Loyale wagon... body wise it's in great condition, mechanically it needs have some work reassembling things. I guess that the owner before the guy I'm getting it from had the timing belts replaced but ran out of $$$ to get it put back together the rest of the way... Apparently it's all there though! hyrysc
That's what I'm talkin' about!! Very nice. Get er going so we can start our own little MO soob off road club and not let all the guys out west have all the fun!
Gloyale
AW c'mon, dont forget the 85-87 SPFI No SPFI in 85 at all. 86 only in Cali and 2wd cars. IIRC believe in 87 only Cali and 2wds as well, but I'm not positive about 87.
ellets
Seems to be a lot of us in Mo. I am at lake of the ozarks. Only thing is they seem to multiply here. I now have 3 sitting around. Just aquired an 88GL. Had bad rod so I pulled the engine from an 88DL with rusted out suspension mounts. Car is running good. Getting a new windshield Tues and will be ready to get registered. cobcob
Awesome! I'm down in the Springfield area, once I get my beast going we should try for a local cruise night or something! I'd love to unwind this turbo'd wagon round some of the corners up near Camdenton, not to mention hitting the dirt for a bit of rally!
Cougar
Hope the car works well for you. At on point in time I had two of those at once that were even the same color. I still have the FSM manuals for the car. Check the intake manifold gaskets for leaks there.

Cougar
You're welcome for the tip. I still use the manuals to help others here on the site with questions but I will keep you in mind if I do decide to sell them. If you have questions let me know. Keep checking Ebay for manuals as you will most likely come across a set in time. Mine cost me about 100 dollars new. It is a set of 4 manuals. You may be able to find a set for around 30 dollars if you keep watching. I think you can set a alert also if you want to.

gbrand
Good luck on the soobs...If I was still in Mo. I'd try to hook up...lived there 1972 thru 1985...graduated HS from Cuba and finally got my engineering degree from UM Rolla. Once the wife to be graduated moved to Texas. I still travel there quite regularly, my parents live near Rolla and hers near Macon, and we have a ton of friends from college up there. Wish I had my 80 4wd wagon when i lived up there, that thing would not stop in ice and snow!
cobcob
Rather than create another thread I thought I'd add my update in here... Intake snorkus arrived 2 days ago (Thanks Barracuda!) and my MAF arrived yesterday (Thanks Crawlerdan!) Got everything installed last night, plugged the MAF in and cranked the engine. It'll start and run but I can't get it to idle without my foot on the gas. The new MAF seems to have done the trick in terms of getting it out of 'Limp mode' so now I'm just chasing down an idling issue as well as a coolant leak that I *think* is coming from the turbo cooling lines. We're getting there though!! I also seem to have a couple of 'ports' for want of a better word, that look like they're meant to have a vac line hooked up to them, I'm going to dig through my alldata sheets tonight and see if I can figure that one out. The one I can think of is on the top of the intake, towards the passenger side of the car, it's just under the plug leads (although I think they're routed wrong!!) Here's a pic... The one on the left is the one that has nothing connected to it. What is the component highlighted on the right?

That one on the left is a guaranteed vacuum leak . That, and others like it are the reason for your crappy idle. Will also serve as a boost leak when you get on it. The component on the right is either the EGR solenoid or purge control solenoid. Follow the lines to see if it goes to the EGR or purge canister. (its been so long since I removed all that stuff, I can't remember which is which. My first soob was also an 88 GL10 Turbo wagon. Most reliable soob I have ever owned. cobcob
Thanks man, I figured that the one on the left would be a major cause of vac leak, the question is: what does it connect to? I looked last night but couldn't find any other port that size that was missing a vac line... seems almost the same size as the PCV line and I don't have all my books with me right now... from the alldata sheet I looked up a while ago I *think* it's meant to go to a vac switch of some type... calebz
Yup - Just looked at mine. Theres a hose coming off that nipple that goes to the switch that turns the 'turbo' light on on the dash (the switch is mounted on the pass side fenderwell, right in front of the strut tower). It also T's off to the vacuum cannister that operates the HVAC controls. Dunno if thats how it goes in a stock configuration, but thats how mine is set up. I'm pretty sure I know right where it hooks up to now! Seems like that'd be a good spot to hook into for a boost gauge at a later date. Thanks again! cobcob
Finally no more check engine light :headbang: MAF + some hack job wiring on the knock sensor has taken care of that. I'm going to put the front up on jack stands now and inspect the exhaust from the heads to the up pipe, the car won't idle smoothly, it wants to 'semi-idle' at around 400RPM (not precise, 2 bars on the digidash) and it's lumpy as heck. It'll give an occasional 'fut' sounds like a back fire out the intake but it's not coming from there at all. I had my hand down the driver's side of the engine checking the connections on the manifold for any vac leaks cos I can hear something hissing and when the engine goes 'fut' I can feel a blast of air down there. Seems like it might be coming from where the exhaust bolts up to the engine so that's my first place to check. The idle smooths out at higher RPM's, I can keep it going with no 'fut' sounds if I press the gas slightly or pull on the throttle cable from outside the car. Have to get a timing light so I can check the timing and adjust the idle speed if needed also.

Nothings sounds better than a turbo idling at 3000 RPM's:grin:
