Tires?

Recommended Posts

Hi All;

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about these symptoms, At very low speeds it seems like my 91 Loyale is "bouncing" as if one or more tires is out of round, Also, at speeds around 70mph through 80mph the front end shudders a bit like "out of balance" tires, all my cv's and joints are good.

These tires are almost new and I can't think of any other explanation.

Any ideas?

Yeah check if your struts are blown but, check to see if your tires threw a weight, It may actually have not thrown it off but it could have moved so unless you keep your wheels immaculent then you should beable to see if it did (theres weights on the inside and outside of the tires)

Hey All;

I may not have really explained it right. The "bouncing at low speed is like the whole rear of the car is going up and down as if a rear tire was oval.

This is only felt about 2-5 mph. The car feels real good after that until right at 70 the front sort of shudders like an out of balance tire.

Would bad struts or warped rim explain this? How do I "test" struts or find out if a rim is warped ? I will go have the tire shop check wheel balance as the tires are new and under warranty.

If the tires are the only thing that has changed recently and you haven't hit anything in the roadway, then it probably is the tires. If they are radials, sometimes they can get out of round by sitting for a while. I remember when radials first came out there were a lot of issues with them flat-spotting after sitting, sometimes overnight for the cheaper brands. It sounds like since the whole back is undulating (i like that word) you may have a well matched set of faulty tires.

I had a similar weird thing happen on my '85 wagon after getting brand new tires... I assumed something else was wrong and the tire shop wanted to replace my axles just to see if that would fix it...

I took it to a real mechanic who found that one of the new tires had a bubble that appeared in the tread once the tire warmed up...

if you really think it's a tire then rotate them and see if the problem changes... if the rear wheel is bent of the tire is bad then putting it up front should make it worse, and obvious...

Just went through this awhile back. Have the tires load balanced. A regular spin balance sometimes does`nt pick these issues up. Get a 4-wheel alignment performed. Run your hand around the road surface part of the tire and if you feel any irregularities such as cupping then your struts are shot.;)

Yes I belive that Merkatroid, (my bro in law) had this issue with his 86 Gl, my sister came home one night and said that I was making this horrible noise and It kept on getting louder and louder, then she had it towed because it was so deafaning loud, so all in all my bro in law got the driveshaft rebuilt, (and had a zerkfitting on it) and I think that problem (of the many) has been solved.
