Pull off the steering wheel colomn plastic. On the oppisite side of the ignition theres a relay, held on by 2 small screws. Remove it and then you can use anything to turn the relay and sart the car.

This post will self destruct after the original thread starter reads it and replies:-p

What you are referring to is actually the Ignition switch, not a relay. Only problem is that even with access to the switch to turn on the car, you still can't drive it. The steering colunm lockout is not deactivated unless the ignition cylinder itself turned.

If you want to defeat that you have to remove the lock cylinder. It has to be turned to the on position, then you can press the little pin on the side in and the cylinder will slide out. You might be able to get a used cylinder and key form a junkyard, or a new one from subaru. Problem is you will have to get it turned somehow before you can remove it.

Do you have any Subaru keys? Friends with them? Nissan Keys? The reason I ask is that often with a little wiggling and turning, you can get almost any Old suby key to work on any suby. The older and more worn the key, the better. If you can get it turned once, you can get it out(via pressing the little set pin once turned), and replace it.

You know though, it might be easier to just remove the lock cylinder from the door. Take it in to a good locksmith and they can make a new key for it.

To get around the wheel lock (gads, I'm giving away all the secrets) take a pair of channel locks and get a grip on the ring on the outside of the ign switch. Give it a hard twist and pull. The whole thing will come out, then all you need to do is insert a s screwdriver and turn the lock at the end.

But your right about the relay, its actually a switch....just a extension of the ign switch/lock. But you need this off and accessable in order to start the car.

I looked at a 87 XT on Monday and there was no one around, so no key to start it. I tried 3 of the keys on my key ring and one started it. If the car is high mileage, almost any Subaru key will turn the ign, with a little fiddling.

lets just endangers LOTS of cars....

same thing goes for datsuns and up to mid eighties nissans... I can start AND unlock my brothers truck (its a 95 i think, too) with my soob key, and that has been VERY helpful before.

Don't count on it working every time, though. Just a reasonable likelihood.

With frameless doors and the ignition plug like it is on these old Subaru's I could steal one in under 5mins if I wanted.. It's pretty bad and that's why I suggest you get a switch to install somewhere in the ignition system to kill all the power (aka kill switch.)

Just make sure it's hidden and not obviously on the ignition wire.

A switch to the fuel pump is the best;)

When I was gone on vacation I pulled the plugs on the fuel pumps on 2 of my cars. They would have had to tow them away.

Yeah... I used to prevent this on my old suby by leaving the doors unlocked and the keys in the ignition.... I guess no one wanted to steal a rust covered multicolored dented '82 subaru wagon  This was in a college town where most the students had rich parents... so my car was almost always the worst on the the block.
