I think this is the 3rd or even 4th 02 sensor on my car.

I looked in my Haynes Subaru repair book last night and it didn't list where the MAF sensor is. Anyone know where that is on an 01 Forester?

Ah - did a search - I bet it has a MAP not a MAF.

I'm not positive, but I thought that only earlier cars had a MAP. If it has a MAF, it'll be right after the air filter in a box about 3" on a side with an electric connector on the side. The sensor itself is a little bitty thing in the middle of this box, and I don't think the sensor itself comes out of that box.

I have had bad cats (2 diff. cars) that didn't produce the rotten egg smell, or any smell for that matter. Not saying if this is your problem or not, just letting you know you could have a bad cat w/o smells.

How do you tell a bad cat? They just look at you like they own the place..

hehehehe

Well somone had to say it

You are right, no MAF in 2001.

I have a 00 Impreza RS that was having possibly similar problems. I took the pipe with the 2 cats in it off to look inside...what I found was a bit surprising.

Looking back upstream from the 2nd one, everything looks fine, but when I looked into the front converter, there was nothing inside there

So.. I got out the saw and cut the pipe between the 2 converters and inside was the remnants of my front cat, looked like someone had jammed a 'chore boy' metal scrubber in there with great prejudice. It took some work to get it out of there. I'd guess it had to be 95% clogged, maybe worse..

I replaced the front O2 sensor and welded the pipe back together after cleaning out all the stuff and it runs a lot better..

I believe you can check for clogged converters/pipes using a vacuum gauge too, but I've never tried it.

Hope this helps ya.

Good Luck.

Sometimes bogging, sometimes bucking. Mostly on hills. Can be a smooth upward gradient, not just a steep hill.

I think the suggestion to check the fuel pressure is a good one. I did have them change the fuel filter, and there was some improvement I think, but it's so hard to say definitively with a problem that is intermittent.

I haven't had the plug wires changed in 73k. But I did run the car at night and lift the hood to see if I saw any sparking, and I did not.

I cleaned the MAF on mine (no difference, not applicable to yours with MAP).

I just ordered NGK plugs and NGK wires from Rockauto, but yours is much newer. Lots of threads here about plugs and wires sensitivity.

I've had similar problems with my 01 Forester.

I noticed it most with the A/C on?

I have replaced my Knock Sensor and the problem seems to have gone away to some degree.

Although A/C still sucks the performance out of the motor.:-\

Have you replaced your front 02 sensor?
