Loyale 93 rear differential locked

Hi,

This W.E. I engaged 4WD cause there was snow and since I can't get back to 2WD.

Worst, the rear diferential is locked. When I do tight turns (like for parking) the gar brake hard. I got it to a garage to look if I had not lost oil. No, Oil is perfect. Good level and clear. But he did confirm me that it was locked.

As he is not specialist in Subaru/4x4 he didn't try to work on it and I don't want to get it just somewhere and pay the big price if not necessary.

Do you guys have an idea of what can cause that??

Thanks.

Tcass, it sounds like you have 4wd "binding"

Are the front and rear tires exactly alike?

My bet is one set is a different diameter than the other.

Back the car up for about 20 meters or so.

The diff lock you are expierencing sounds like it is the center diff being bound up.

Hope this helps and check the coil bracket ground for your other post problem.

They are same dimention tires but the rear right is weidrly used (noe even). is has spots almost slick and others almost new. like if I had a broken bearing.

Also, I've not changed tires lately, they are the same as last year.

Can it be the "specaily" used tire causing that?

P.S.

Does that car have LSD? I know that the previous owner did himself a gearbox oil change just before to sell it to me. If it has LSD and he didn't put the additive, can it be causing that trouble?

It's normal for a Loyale to feel like it's binding when doing tight turns on dry pavement (90 degrees is enough) with the 4WD engaged.

I dont think it's a rear diff problem.

But you have to find a way to disengage the 4wd.

Try this number it's a garage near where your car is, maybe in St-Jerôme itself.

1-800-400-3792

They do work on Subaru exhaust systems and are recommended by the CAA. Maybe they know of someone who could help you or help you themselves.

It happened once that I could not disengage the 4Wd but playing with the trans (1st-reverse, 1st reverse) while also playing with the 4wd button took care of it.

So I dont know what else to do in your case. Maybe someone else here can help you.

Good luck.

It felt like you're talking since the begining (I was a litle woring about it thanks) but now, it is realy Hard braking. If I don't take clutch and add gas, the car would stall. The resistence is like having to climb a heavy hill (30% at least)

Also the guy at the garage told me that the diff was acting like a locked diff. :-\

Does it do it only while turning or also going in a staight line ?

Just testing the rear axle, one not familiar with this kind of Subary might in fact get the impression that the rear diff is at fault. Possible but I dont think so.

Hope the number I gave you will help.

Did you try playing with the 4WD button while going formard slowly and then shifting to reverse and back?

Your Loyale does not have a center differential, that is why you are experiencing this drive train bind. It is a 5-speed with push button 4wd, right? Get it in the dirt or on a snow packed road and try to get the wheels to spin, also try backing up like Skip said. That should relieve the bind. Then it will shift out of 4wd.

Good luck

First I have to say a Big Thank You to Skip for the solution and to all of you for your support and suggestions.

Now, what was the real problem/fix.

The car was not stuck un 4wd. it was something between the vacuum servo, the cable and the lever that engages 4wd that was stuck.

A big bunch of greasing stuff on hte cable and around the lever to try to release it.

The car engages 4wd at all time but doesnt release it easily... We don't know if it's the cable that is too rusted or the servo that have a lack of power...

To solve it my mechanic did fix me a "On demand" solution in case it happens again. He ran a wire from the lever to the front of the car so if I need 4wd I can put it on and if it doesn't release ir after, I just pull the wire and I'm back on 2wd :D All that for peanuts.

Once again thanks guys. This forum rules :headbang:

You still need to get thatodd tire off of the car. It may include buying all new tires to get them the same diameter. Subaru's are real suseptible to drivetrain bind. The tires make as much or more of a difference as driving on pavement.

Better to have it stuck in 4wd then stuck in 2wd.. I had the same thing happen on my GMC S-15 a few years ago when I was 4x4ing.. I thought I blew my transfercase or something cuz I had no 4 wheel drive.. Brought it to the shop, pulled **** apart and then checked the vacumn line.. lol
