I've searched and searched,no luck...

I cant find the info I need. I have a 1980 4wd, GL, Hatchback with a EA71, 4 speed. The engine has a terrible knock. I also have a 1984 2wd, GL hatchback with a EA81, 5 speed. Engine runs great...The bellhousings are obviously diffrent. Can I simply replace the ea71 with my ea81 using the bellhousing off the ea71. Thats what i want to do anyways. First post here...Great site. Thanks for any help or suggestions. I know this has been asked a million times before, but everything I have read leaves lotsa blanks....

Thanks for the direct answer. Now I can unravel my situation. The 1980 wagon is a beautiful little car. 110k miles and really is in good shape. The 1984 is pretty much a parts car with a good engine. Im thinking I should look for a good running EA71 or maybe trade my EA81. Anyone interested??? Yelm is a great little town. Growing like crazy. I bet I know the place your sister ownes. Just up the street. Actually everything is just up the street. Ill check out the thread..I was wondering if the white Brush Guard is a factory item.. I just bought this beauty today..$350

If I was able to find a EA81 matching transmission, then is that a dirrect bolt in? I am wondering about driveline lenght and exhaust hookup. I see alot writen about Brat conversions but not much on the 80' wagon conversion...Thanks.

if you find a gen 2 ea71 (fat case engine) from a 1600 dl hatch or standard hatch (1983-4 or newer) they have the ea71 block that matches ea81 physiucal dimensions, if you find this motor you can swap on your old bellhousing to fit on the new motor.

Is a gen 2 ea71 what I have now in my 1980 gl hatch? I'm really new. Sounds like your giving me some good info but I aint understanding it. Can you explain it a little more? Thanks.

The tranny you need for the EA81 engine might be in the Tacoma Pull a Part. There were a couple of 4wd EA81's in the yard a couple of weeks ago when I was there. They dont charge much either, usually around $75.

Tacoma PAP is on Steele St. just off of Hwy512.

As long as you are swapping in another ea81 4wd transmission you won't need to worry about the driveshaft length or anything like that.

You will need to use the front part of the exhaust for the ea81 motor. They are slightly wider than the ea71...

Sounds pretty straight foward. I have the exhaust for the EA81. Still attached to the engine in the 2wd wagon. This is probably my best option since the EA81 is a upgrade also. Will the existing shifting linkage in my '80 wagon work with the new EA81 4wd transmission? Thanks.

OK, thats what I thought the 80 model had in it. So any of the ea81 4wd's will work directly with your stock linkages. Another plus to this swap is that you will be able to have a lo range 4wd as well, as long as you get a GL tranny.

Heres where im at. I just picked up a '84 wagon, ea81, 4speed d/r .

Plus, it has a running ea81. A few interior parts I need and a good radiator with two Fans. Im gonna pull the ea71 and s/r 4speed out of the '80 tonight.

Ive been thinking about that pretty hard. I really like the color of the '80 and it has way less miles. Plus the third eye is the coolest thing ive ever seen on a vehicle. The scary part is that the clutch in the '84 is so bad (slipping) that I cant properly test the trans before I make the swap.

If the 3rd eye was the only reason, which I know paint color is a factor as well, you can retrofit the 3rd eye into the 84's grill. There have been a few people who have done it on here, I'm pretty sure carfreak85 has some pictures floating around of his install.

Also, make sure you get the correct clutch, the 84 will have a 225mm disk where as the 80 has a 200mm.

When doing the swap, it is also a great time to make sure all the mounts are in good shape for the engine and transmission. The ea81 trannies fail more often because of crappy mounts. Aftermarket transmission mounts are difficult to come by, but General Disorder has a good solution for this... http://home.comcast.net/%7Etrilinear/4speed_mounts.html

Thanks for all the info. Im going to run to the auto parts store and order a clutch kit right now. Maybe some gaskets too. I like the looks of the ea82 mounts. I know where I can get some. Im going to pull the s/r 4speed in a little while. Im anxious to get started. The '84 has title issues as well. I got an afidavid or what ever in lieu of. Also. The ignition has issues but really its in decent shape. Im happy about all the correct console stuff. Craigslist again... $250

Mostly just someone who didnt know what they were doing went after the harness with a pair of cutters. Mostly the area around the coil. The coil was missing so I installed a ford coil, used my other '84 as a guide and was able to get it to run. Runs good but the clutch is shot like I have never seen before. The car will barely inch foward and back then stop. And, the key has been by passed. It all works. I dont know what the wall switch does. It wont turn the car off. I had to pull a coil wire to shut it off.

Im really fond of the '80. I orderd the clutch. $159 at schucks and got some gaskets too. They'll be here on the 17th. Gives me a couple days to clean stuff up and get ready.
