Something turbo related and damn hard to describe

Recommended Posts

Because it is. I'll do my best.

I'll start off with a VF-7 and VF-10 side by side. Apart from physical size and mounts, the biggest difference is the position/direction of the compressor inlet and outlet. After examining them, I can see that the shiney front part of the compressor is only bolted onto the rest of the turbocharger and I think (well, guess) that it isn't involved with shaft in anyway.

So with that in mind, I am wondering if it is possible for me to take off the shiney front part of the compressor of either the VF-7 or VF-10 and rotate so both are the same so that the VF-7 outlet would be facing to the right or the VF-10 outlet would be facing upwards? Would I be able to do without damaging anything? Or does a workshop that specialises in turbochargers have to do it because of some process required?

Don't ask why right now, I'm just scheming away as usual.

Keep in mind as you are rotating housings.

That turbo has an internal wastegate. The actuator is on the housing. may have to come up with a new way to mount the actuator.

EDIT: I don't have any of the larger VF series here to look at, I could be wrong. I did have a VF40 in my hands a few days ago, but the mounts on that thing are so rump roast backwards, it would be quite a bit of work to make it fit.

Okay I have to make a guess(I'm dying to know). I'm guessing that you are installing a front mount intercooler(WRX FMIC kit maybe?) and you need to clock the compressor housing to make the piping fit properly. There. That is my guess for the day.(C'mon, C'mon, Daddy needs a new pair of shoes!!! or a Cookie will suffice!)

Just a cookie, cos you're only 1/2 right. Going AWIC from a JDM Legacy. Just means I don't have to have a scoop.

Ummm...not quite. It'll reduce the amount of piping though.

Man this far too wierd. I just brought an AWIC too for my Vortex AND you're in Dunedin too. After hardly seeing anything but Leones, T-Legs and Imprezza for years :headbang:

Well in the Legacy the water pump is mounted inside the passenger guard...right where I do believe the airpump is located.

Yup that is where it is on a Legacy,I to have just brought a WAIC for my RX 11 and have every thing I need except time and some stainless pipes was thinking of putting pump under bonnet in front of air cleaner

I was looking at mounting the pump to the crossmember under the radiator just to one side of centre (engine bay side). Maybe i'll take the guard off and remove the compressor for the air susp and put it there......

I still have to find some more hose to run the WAIC. I have the legacy stuff but its all the wrong lengths and shapes. Anyone got any idea on where to get that kinda hose? I was thinking I could use hydraulic high temp hose if it was a good price and available in the right internal diameter/length.

I am going to run 14mm copper pipe for the long runs and then rubber heater hose for joiners,it will look purty....
