When I got my Legacy the sunroof was sealed shut with something that looked like black caulking. The owner said it stopped working so he just sealed it off. Today I decided I'd try and fix it and cut all the caulking out to find that it wasn't closed all the way and he had just sealed it while it was still open  anyway, I tried to use it and nothing happened. I'm guessing the motor is toasted. Anyone have an extra?? Any other possibilities its something else?

Your sunroof problems could be quite a few things. The switch may be bad, the motor may be burned out, the computer may be bad, the fuse, or the relay, if so equipped. After having pulled the dual sunroof out of my last OBW to fix the front sunroof's track, I can tell you that it can be time consuming and expensive. If you are handy and so inclined, I would suggest that you pull your headliner to get at the switch, the motor, and the computer if its located up there and not somewhere else. You may find a corroded or loose connection which is an easy fix. If not, I would try sourcing an entire sunroof and assorted switches, computer, etc., from a wrecker and do a complete swap. It is not rocket science to remove and replace the entire assembly, particularly when you have the headliner out and can see what is involved. After disconnecting the draintubes and unbolting the sunroof rails from the roof superstructure, the entire assembly comes out in one piece.

darn...maybe i should have left it sealed up....summers almost over. I think it was the ghetto caulking job that bugs me though. I'd rather just fix it right. I will do that though

First, I'd check the switch to see if it is plugged in. It may have been disconnected when glued shut.

If I remember right you have a '94 Turbo sedan?

Remove the two map light lenses, I believe the screws are in there.

Pull down light panel, check the sunroof switch is plugged in.

If not, then you know what to do...And if that is the case, I would suspect that the roof leaks, and is the reason it is glued shut.

You'll have to remove and reseal the track assembly to the pan, this is the spendy part... many hours and  $$$ to have someone repair it. OR a day with your car in the driveway getting the interior torn out from the pillars up.

If it leaks, the drains are most likely plugged up with dirt and grime. No need to remove and reseal the whole unit, just have to pull down the headliner and clean the tubes out.

If you need the motor, I've got one as well in a 90 LS wagon that worked well when I began parting it out earlier this year.
