August 21, 200718 yr Does anyone know if a collasped "rattling" cat would cause a check engine light, Mine rattles "Mostly noticeable during shifts when the clutch is pushed in and the throttle is let off" But runs very well anyway, But I get a check engine shortly after startup, (within the first mile). Or has anyone removed the cat. And welded in new tubing in it's place, If so how did the car perform without it?

Uhm, not me, Mr. Officer! if you have a CEL, then check the code. its easy, you know how to do it don't you? I cant see what code it would throw, but I suppose if you have a clogged cat then the chances of having a good O2 sensor are rather low (unless you know otherwise) and that WOULD cause a CEL. But, it says "check Engine;" Check It! :-p (btw yes I run a gutted cat and it runs fine.)
August 21, 200718 yr also make sure it's not the heat shield that's rattling. If you still have the heat shield, use a piece of wood to press on it while some else revs the engine. Otherwise gently tap the cat with a rubber hammer to see if the rattling is internal to the cat or not. -Dave
August 21, 200718 yr and if it is a heat sheild pop it off with a screwdriver and just go without it. Just dont park over grass

August 22, 200718 yr Wont that burn a hole through the floor board? Nope. I have had many miles with no shield. When they get loose, I remove them. I've been running EA82 4WD 3AT wagons for over 15 years.
August 22, 200718 yr it probably won't help the life of the axle boot that's typically right above the cat. Other than that though, no harm in taking the cover off.
