Can a 3-spd Loyale wagon really do 130mph?

Recommended Posts

as for the hp issue i think that you dont need massive amounts of hp to go fast you just need a good strong engine to do that. take my 85' GL wagon 82hp N/A engine and that car can really move. yes it takes a few seconds more to get up to speed but it moves. the GL is manual but i'm pretty sure that the auto tranny ones can do very well too. that they will make it to 130? i dont think so but that they will reach over 100? most likely.

Its basics physics

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_resistance

The faster you go the more HP you need to fight wind resistance.

"Note that the power needed to push an object through a fluid increases as the cube of the velocity. A car cruising on a highway at 50 mph (80 km/h) may require only 10 horsepower (7.5 kW) to overcome air drag, but that same car at 100 mph (160 km/h) requires 80 hp (60 kW). With a doubling of speed the drag (force) quadruples per the formula. Exerting four times the force over a fixed distance produces four times as much work. At twice the speed the work (resulting in displacement over a fixed distance) is done twice as fast. Since power is the rate of doing work, four times the work done in half the time requires eight times the power."

I say again:

Horsepower is a function of torque; torque is the rating of the work capacity that the engine can do.

In other words, yes, you DO NEED a certain, minimum amount of power to move a certain mass at a given speed.

It is elementary physics; I don't choose that phrase to condescend, it is touched on as early as elementary school science text books. "Work." Force acting upon mass. Pulleys and levers and such. Granted, elementary science texts don't explain anything automotive, but the principles are the same from Isaac Newton on.

I don't care to read the whole thread because it's a simply stupid beginning question. For the guys talking about physics and all, this does NOT apply.

The gearing in the 3AT is so wonky, it's a PITA to even get into the triple digits.

And yes, I have a good running low mileage EA82 coupe, it's STILL a PITA.

"The Loyale" why don't you go ahead and try to do 130 in a 3AT wagon?

Keep trying and trying, until you blow the engine. Then ask us how fast you can drive with a blown engine. And I'll make fun of you once more.

In other words, NO, it won't. I've topped my coupe off at 115. And it took downhill force, and the car was shaking like holy hell.

And the cracker did speak; and it was good.

i got mine up to 75 today and it felt like i was suddenly hydroplaneing. I didnt loose control but it felt very loose, kinda free flowing. Also whats up with the 3 speed. Y only a 3 speed auto and a 5 speed manual. Seems kinda silly to me.

Ben

Back then thats all the technology and budget would allow.

First thought........ "this thread would be great with BDG involved"

Second thought......."if it turns out that EA82s will do 130mph I wasted 25 grand on a WRX"

Just seemed like a good point to insert some humor:lol:

I took my 87 GL10 wagon to 105 with a 3spd auto, but it wasn't going to give me much more then that:-p

I was going to say that physicis always applies, but if somone wants to make :Flame: like that i just ignore them.

If it wasnt for physics the car wouldnt operate.

nah, his point was that "physics and all be damned, just TRY it in real life and you will rapidly discover that it is utterly impractical to even discuss."
