kiwi subbie Posted September 1, 2007 Share Posted September 1, 2007 2day i finally got my 1974 1400 DL sedan running and road legal. ive owned it 4 an year and it was the 1st time ive drived it. it handels an lot better than i thought it would. i had 2 redo all the brakes. also painted the underneath of the floor. engine runs good. im still getting used to driving an 4 speed box. any way heres some pics heres pics of when i 1st got it heres some pics taken when working on it Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Zeb Posted September 10, 2007 Share Posted September 10, 2007 This is a great post. A friend and I just liberated a very similar 74 2 door GL from an abandoned junkyard outside of Fairbanks, AK. The tags expired in 1988, so it's been sitting for nearly 20 years. It has a thick coating of grime, a busted back window, and moss coated carpeting. Surprisingly the tires held air, even the one that had several bicycle tire patches on the sidewall. One of the rear brakes was seized up, so we removed the shoes in order to tow it home on a car dolly. The body is in very good shape, with only a couple of minor dings and hardly any rust, even after all those harsh Fairbanks winters sitting under snow. Even more shocking is that after putting in a battery, a universal fuel pump with a line going to a gas can, rapping on the starter a couple of times and squirting some GumOut in the carb, it turned over and started right up. It idles fine, but stalls when the throttle is opened. I'm curious where you got the shiny new rear brake parts. I've been searching around but can only locate the shoes. Does anyone know of a good source or even part numbers for the whole drum assembly? Or for that matter, a good source for old Subaru parts in general? Even when I lived there any of them that have ever been that old have been a heap of rust. Nice job on rescueing an old subie. I am truely amazed you found that in that condition!
