new cv horrible vibration.

replaced cv w/reman. i hate them. wanted to get new but something came up that took my extra $$ and i needed the car on the road. anyways, got it in no prob. now i got a horrible vibration. hoping it is just a tight one. the knuckle was awfully tight when i put it in. if that is the case is it going to loosen up with wear or is there something i can do to it or should i get another one?? i did search the site on the subject and this to me seemed the most likely scenario. now looking for a solution. that vibe drives me bonkers.

any chance something wasn't right with installation? it's for sure the right axle?

 

never again on reman'ed for me. i've seen them new out of the box blow to bits and others have had problems as well. you're better off with a used Subaru original. if the vibration is bad enough i would do something about it soon, as i believe a bad CV can damage the plastic speedometer driven gear inside the front differential. that plastic gear is only inches from the shaft, but if it breaks it requires removing and disassembling the transmission and big bucks just to replace a plastic gear. i believe the speedometer driven gear is on the passengers side, so if it's that side i'd be more concerned.

drivers side. pulled off re-installed. still the same vibe. yeah, i'm sure it's the correct axle. guess i'm just gonna have to pull it and return it for another. god that pisses me off. i hate replacing those things. i thought the axle nut may be loose but it's as tight as i can get it. think i may back it off a bit. old car may not used to being tight. *insert dirty joke here*

DONT back it off!!!! Quick way to destroy your bearings AND the bearing housing; you don't want to have to replace that entire "shoulder" do you?

Is the vibration on acceleration and then goes away when you let off on the gas and coast? Chronic symptom for a bad inner (DOJ) joint on the axle. CVJ doesn't vibrate, it clicks when it's bad. This is the unfortunate case with re-mans. I've had better luck with "selected" used axles from Pull a Part; price is better and at least I can return it within 30 days if it's a POS. I've bought re-mans from cvaxles.com and had good success with them; recently I bought two from MWE in Colorado and the first one is just fine (second one is waiting for the other PAP boot to let go). Only problem I have with the PAP axles is the boots don't last as long as I'd like and make the low cost of the axle less attractive.

it actually gets worse when i coast. i wasn't gonna make it loose, just snug, right now it's so tight i can stand on the wrench and it won't budge any tighter.

145 ft-pounds minimum. From what I have read, there IS no maximum.

 

If your wrench is 12-18 inches long, you should HAVE to STAND on it; unless you weigh 250+ pounds and even then standing on it shouldn't hurt anything.

 

I weigh a slight 140; I used a three foot cheater bar on the end of my pipe wrench. (couldn't find a 34mm socket up at the shop, so no torque wrench :( )

Correct there is no maximum. Castle nut is 36mm and not 34. Anyway, I never bother with the torque wrench for that one; as tight as I can make it works for me.

I can sympathize, had a exact same problem years ago. Turned out to be all of the grease was down on one end of the joint, causing a embalance. Oh yea, got a free replacement without a hassle, but it does`nt take in the fact that you have to go through removal and installation x 2.
